And Kleenex is a brand name. However, common usage soon makes the brand lose value. ereader is too close to a generic to hold Brand status for too long, so I would imagine that soon, B&N will be trotting out the "new" eBN format and abandoning eReader as a lost cause...

I have decided to create yet another specific ebook format. It will be called "liseuse". The only purpose of this format will be to prevent the horrible word "liseuse" from being used to refer to ebook readers.

I can't see liseuse being used much by anyone outside of these (and perhaps other similar) forums I'm afraid. In fact it's more likely just to confuse anyone new to the idea of electronic readers. Since we're fans of these type of devices surely we should be helping promote them rather than alienating people with odd souding words they've never heard of before nevermind used.

I still don't see what's wrong with "ebook reader" or even just "reader". I know that I am the ebook reader but I seriously doubt that you will ever confuse a device for a person or vice versa. "I was reading Dante last night on my ebook reader" or "I dropped my reader" or "I'm hoping for a firmware update for my reader" are all perfectly unambiguous. Liseuse is cute and I have no issues with it but I just think it's very unlikely to become commonly used in English speech.

I'll confess that every time I see the word I'm tempted to pronounce it as something like the li sound in lithium and Seuss as in Dr. Seuss. Then I start wondering how far off I am from the actual pronounciation.

I think the context wil not permit any confusion. Who says "I'm gonna use my ereader" when talking about an ebook/file format? In this forum, for example, never read someone say "I want to buy an ereader" (while refering to the ebook format), or "I will read in my mobi" (or whatever).
Although homonyms, there's no mistake when using the "ereader" word, either the ebook format or the electronic reader. |

Nobody here has as of yet proved that liseuse means eBook reader. So since it probably doesn't. Why not just let it go? Enough people (myself included) dislike the word for the meaning to which it doesn't mean.

The Wikipedia page says:
"One of its original meanings is "a woman who enjoys reading". " and then says: "The primary reason advocates proprose is to differentiate the person reading the ebook from the device being read." ![]() |

Serious question: Why is it "liseuse" and not "liseur"? What determines grammatical gender for words such as this?
