Jetbook again

I don't know what all the commotion is about.

I reformatted a bunch of html and lit books I had on my computer from various web sites to epub using Calibre and loaded them on an SD card; they all looked great on the Jetbook. Since I pop the SD card into my laptop it is fast and easy to create new folders and move the books around on the card. And the reader lists all the folders and separate ebooks.

To open a folder you tap the corresponding number or highlight it and press OK and the contents of the folder is displayed. I do not own any DRM books (except for a few which I got from SONY when I first bought my 500.) But I have a couple thousand of ebooks to read and I find more of them each day. Now I just have to find the time to read them all.

I was at BB&B yesterday. Didn't see the Jetbook available there yet, so I bought a salad spinner instead. Works great so far!

Have a look at the comparison chart when they compare the Sony and Amazon. They do a really good job of fudging the fact there.

The fact that they don't say it supports no DRM is a big issue.

Utter nonsense.

The Sony website does not say that their PRS505 does not have a search function which is a major issue for me. But I did my research first and ruled it out. Neither does Sony mention that you can't read books bought from either Amazon, meant for the Kindle, or from eReader. Does all this mean Sony is lying or is deceptive? No, of course not. Bottom line: manufacturers don't have to tell you what their products don't do.

That said, I do prefer the way Sony lists their supported formats to Ectaco's.

My advice? Do your homework.

You are very right, and had I been as diligent as you I would not have a three hundred dollar Sony and a JetBook on order. Sony’s site being less than forthright is not what is being discussed here, nor is it an excuse for Ectaco’s deceptive advertising.

I'm pretty sure that their product is good enough that they don't need deception to sell it, and it in fact only detracts.

Anybody wanna buy a Sony PRS505, silver, cheap?

If the 505 could search, it would have been mentioned. What Sony does mention is what formats have DRM and what formats do not. So you know what you can and cannot do as far as purchasing content goes.

In this case, what Ectaco is doing is not giving the consumers enough information to be able to make an informed decision. People who read MR can find out about the Jetbook and know wat it can and cannot do and they are then informed and that's fine. But if the average person who doesn't know about DRM sees the Jetbook on Ectaco's website, they may think it's for them when in fact it may not be. The forum they have for requesting free eBooks doesn't say you won't be getting say The Lord of the Rings just be requesting it.

Quote:
Unlimited. 30 popular WEB sites that we have located hold at least 500,000 FREE access books and audiobooks. You can also request a title from us which we will find and send to you right away.
That is deceptive. Go ahead and request Twilight and see how fast you don't get it.

Please read the following for a diagnosis of their comparison chart for the Sony. They picture a 500 and mix up the 500 with the 505.

I tend to agree. It's an act of omission vs an act of commission. It's an ebook reader, and just because giant world wide corporations decide to create digital locks for their proprietary formats doesn't make it Ectaco's concern. It seems to be a mindset. Drm is the norm, or drm is an anomaly. Ectaco apparently views it as an anomaly. If you want to purchase and read those proprietary locked down formats, use the correct key, the one provided by the makers, or sold to licensees (who will then trumpet the fact). Also, if you are so inclined, jimmy it.

But Ectaco does say that it has an English-English dictionary, and the responsible, professional, and just plain upfront piece of information I would have liked to have seen is "only txt and fb2 supported".

Have any other jetBook owners had the same experience with the dictionary? Am I mistaken? I'd still like to know if "Dictionaries" should be in my User Settings with the new firmware, like the manual says. Maybe dictionary support is coming for the other file types. Maybe there is a big bug in this "beta" firmware. Kris?

Even though I own the jetBook, I don't have a dog in this race. I would just appreciate some answers.

As I know all dictionaries (English-English, English-Spanish, English-Russian, English-Polish and English-German)available for TXT and FB2 formats and will be available for PRC, ePub, Mobi and RTF formats with next firmware update sometimes in May-June.

Kris, will the English-English dictionary be improved? Right now it will only define the simplest English words and isn't much use. I think a dictionary upgrade is the most important improvement that Jetbook can make.

It would also like to be able to BUY more advanced default Language dictionaries for my Jetbook. Is this being considered?

JSWolf, I gave you some Karma. Asking for someone else's Karma to be reduced sounds like bad Karma.

I never once said the Jetbook was lousy. I've bene on about the misinformation and lack of DRM support and information about such for a device to be sold in a mainstream store.
