Information storage doesn't have to be powered by electricity... it just so happens that that's what we've been using for the past century or so, and aren't really familiar with any other method of power generation... but that's for another thread, I think...

This is why I find the Amish fascinating, the ability to borrow certain technologies or neglect others.. Another example would be a pack of good sled dogs being more reliable than a snowmobile when a crucial part fails on a snowy trail in the middle of nowhere. Now the native has no snowmobile and lacks the ability to build a sled or care for the dogs. "Improvement" is relative, speed and efficiency is another matter. Sometimes it's about speed. The horse was replaced by the auto, but at what cost to the planet environmentally? No I'm not a Luddite, and have no intentions of going to live on a farm Just pointing out that progress is not always linear. Way off topic sorry...

I voted "no" as while I believe that ebooks will eventually cover most of the new publishing in the future (at least as an option), for now my library is safe as most of what I actually purchase are reference books (travel, etc.) which are changed frequently. Since I like to archive past editions for reference, keeping the paper versions won't go away any time soon. However, for my pleasure reading, to keep costs down I'd switched almost exclusively to libraries in the past few years, and ebooks will continue that trend. While my physical library grows slowly, I look forward to my electronic one to grow in leaps and bounds. |

Count me as hanging out to get rid of almost all the dead tree books I have. At this stage I get free dead tree books from friends, read them and pass them on. The sooner I can dump my remaining deadwood the better, with very few exceptions. I have a few kids books that I will probably keep (fewer than ten) and that's it. I'm still griding through the scan-correct-save process but it's very slow work.

Gutenberg tried to make his printed books look like hand written manuscripts, so they could reside next to the hand written manuscripts of the time. We are trying to make our ebooks more paper like so they can be accepted along side the paper books of today. There's a parallel here. The only downsides to ebooks are: (1) ridiculous DRM that forbids me from selling used books, and (2) possible failure during (for example) power outages. I said possible, not probable. Andy |

Many science fiction stories have predicted the demise of the printed book and the reverence that the surviving books will receive in the future. The books on the shelves are old and dear friends and I will not part with them if I can avoid it. Some of the books I hope to have in my Kindle will become new and valued friends who's survival will be much easier to insure. Edit: My first ebook purchase from Amazon for my Kindle 2 was ERB's Huge 50+ collection. I had this entire series as hard bound books a half century ago but lost them through the extingencies of time. I nearly cried when I discovered them on Amazon and nearly cried again when I discovered HarryT's Tom Swift Omnibus collection since I had lost those too. Now both will have pride of place as the first books on my ebook shelves. Last edited by NormHart; 02-18-2009 at 07:14 PM.

A message to any of you lot that despise keeping dead-tree copies on your shelves. If you have antiquarian or nicely bound editions, Easton Press, Franklin Library, Folio Society, Arkham House, etc. I would gladly send you my address to ship them to... No I can't afford to purchase them at present, but I would certainly be happy providing you with a nice disposal service for those unwanted texts. Just PM to arrange something... -MJ |

For those of you that don't want to ship your nice old books to the States, I'll offer my services for the UK (I'm sure the yeti won't mind yet more of the house being overrun by books...)

Best not to buy paper in the first place. Quote:
Also the building market got the hand on that one a long time ago, but I do a few once in a while. My favorite is still artsy home furniture, even if China has choked the market.
