So Patricia, Yvan, badgoodDeb, and I are from the crop of '57. I feel honored to be in such good company - except for that statement Yvan recently made about how many books he felt he had left to read given his age. Very depressing. But then maybe he was born really early in '57, eh?

Wasn't '57 also the debut of the Ford Edsel(sp?) (I've seen Peggy Sue got Married...)?

(Yes I know, us young whippersnappers have no sense of respect for their elders and betters.)

I've heard of Haeckel's so-called law of biogenetics, but keeping fins that long is just plain silly.

I feel so old!!! But I am glad (and someone sad) that this forum is not overrun with 16-23. I guess that says something about who reads. Of course, I couldn't do much pleasure reading in that age group, but I remember the very first book I ever got with my own money - Jaws, at age 18. I read it instead of studying for my calculus exam. I guess that is why I am a lawyer (Jaws!) instead of a computer whiz. Debra

Ahh! the fifties, perfect time to break one's neck trying to follow 30 year old kids in a sports game.

Given the nature of the younger people on another forum I'm on (the youngest is about 15, I think), I feel I ought to say that some forums do have well read youngsters who can talk in a mature and coherent manner. Although I suspect the nature of the forum means that the SHUMS aren't ever likely to join up (alternative Victorian history, aka steampunk, if anyone's remotely interested )

I think I ended up working in IT because I spent too much time reading (I really can't remember the first book I bought - it was probably a Famous Five with pocket money!) - I never spent enough time applying myself to things like maths, physics or geography/geology, but for some reason I had a bit of a knack with computers. The amount of reading for pleasure I did would certainly have had an adverse impact had I wanted to study for the bar! (At one point, my main goal with a job was to earn enough money to buy food, clothes and all the books I wanted. Not neccesarily in that order, either...)

I think you just wrote the opening paragraph for a hell-of-a-lot of autobiographies of MR members. Well, mine anyway (except I had a knack for maths & the sciences...but I still didn't apply myself to them).

Cheers,
