God, now I'm stressed out that I went and stupidly spent money on a Kindle Kids Edition 2019 (cheapest I could find at retail in my country) and I'll still end up with KFX files even via the USB transfer method.

Oh well, I'll see when the device actually gets here. An older, second-hand Kindle is ridiculously hard to find here -- we're poor enough that the second-hand market for niche devices is tiny and all the older Kindles are either completely broken or have a high likelihood of being blacklisted.

I could just buy the latest Perry Rhodan novella to test it if you want. I have an Oasis from 2019 but I'm not sure if the novella has DRM because every other seller offers them without DRM. Is DRM mandatory on Amazon?

I can't buy from amazon.de, but yes, I have first-hand knowledge that deDRMing worked for a new book (not downloadable with K4PC 1.17) downloaded for the Kindle Oasis. And yes, this book had DRM.
