However, I doubt that is the source of your issue. calibre on windows will change color theme only if the registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize\AppsUseLightTheme

changes its value from 0 to 1 or vice versa (see the function windows_is_system_dark_mode_enabled) So something in your system is changing that registry key.

AttributeError: 'QStyleOptionViewItem' object has no attribute 'Alternate'

That happened when trying to expand a letter under "Authors" in the tag browser. But, it seems to happen for any expansion. It only happens if both "Show average ratings" and "Use alternating row colors" are selected in the Tag browser settings.

Windows Portable 5.99.5 (calibre-portable.exe) does nothing - no error, not even sure there's an hourglass, nada,

Portable editor and viewer work fine.

I start portable from the .exe -- i.e. no pesky shortcuts.

Tried a reboot, safe mode and install onto another drive - same deal.

5.99.4 was OK this morning.

Possibly related to Qt6:
Calibre 5.99.5 (not portable): With covers view enabled, the mouse wheel scrolling does not work when the mouse cursor is over the covers. Scrolling only works when the mouse cursor is over the scroll bar.

Calibre 5.35: Works fine.

OS: Windows 10 21H1

FWIW: This happens for me with the binary beta. If you click on Behavior or Sharing books by email (and maybe others) you get the exception

I had to kill that before I could run my installed calibre 5.35.

FWIW portable versions 1.48, 2.85.1, 3.48, 4.23 and 5.35 are working fine - as did 5.99.4.

@theducks and @chaley: Weird that would indicate the .ui files are not compiled properly in the binary, dont know how that could be.

Weirder yet: I downloaded the Portable version onto a USB Stick, copied my existing Preferences to the stick and it was just fine
