Yes, that was a joke involving the Italian motorcycle I mentioned. But don't forget the Clara in your list! I'm rather partial to it.

D'Oh! That was my FIRST Kobo - the shame of forgetting it! A delightful device whose only fault was that it made me love Kobos so much that I seized the chgance a few months later to grab a discounted H202 on an end of product run.

New Kobo Elipsa ereader

Along time ago in this thread somebody wanted to know why people would buy an Elipsa. I have owned several Kobo eReader devices, as well as a Barnes & Noble nook and several Kindle devices. In fact, I own two Kindle paperwhite at the moment, one of which I have dedicated to be a Japanese eReader. I currently use a Kobo Clara HD. I also own an iPad or three, and have been reading e-books on them since 2010. The reasons I want an Elipsa are:

Size
Marking up documents
A faster processor
Form factor
I like shiny new things
Because it looks cool, and I want one

That last points may explain why my eyes sparkle at product announcements, but they weren’t enough to push me to buy a Forma. I’ve looked into using my iPad in the way the reMarkable and Elipsa can edit and markup text, and I did find an app that made it possible. It was an app called GoodNotes, and it cost $8. I even have an Apple Pencil to make the process easier. It’s great for signing PDFs, but marking up my book projects would require me converting them into PDFs. I feel Apple has missed the beat on this. Being able to markup everything should already be built into iOS.

I am curious to see if I can involve the Elipsa in my writing workflow, but I can’t comment on that yet. The Elipsa hasn’t arrived.

I think it’s wonderful how we have so many eReader options to choose from. I don’t feel compelled to own one of every kind, but I love seeing different people’s opinions on their favorite eReaders.

Question:
Does anybody know if owning an Elipsa or Forma enables dropbox support on other kobo devices the way owning a Kobo Aura One enabled Overdrive support on every Kobo device or app you used?

Obviously listed in order of increasing importance.

We won't tell your significant-other/accountant/one-who-holds-the-purse-strings that it is not in order of decreasing importance

No, it doesn't. And it sort of makes sense. The Overdrive support adds books to your library and syncs the books from the Kobo servers. Blocking the other devices might have caused problems, especially if they were on older firmware. The Dropbox syncing is between the device and Dropbox. There might be a check with the Kobo server for if the device is allowed to do the sync, but, as there is no way to do the configuration on the other devices, even that might not be needed.

You can markup kepubs and drm-free pdfs on the Elipsa, but I don't know about regular epubs.

Pcmag reviews as excellent:
https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/kobo-elipsa

They say it's a good first effort, and that Onyx Boox Note Air remains their overall pick in this category, due to compatibility with Android apps, more flexibility, hardware and features "such as layered color annotations and a color-shifting front-light."

Their summary:
"Kobo's strength is its excellent balance of simplicity and book availability. I see this as a reader with some extra annotation abilities, not primarily as a digital notepad, and Kobo is delightfully no-nonsense in its UI and design. As I say in every Kobo review, there's no better option if you primarily like to get books from your library with Overdrive. "

Even as someone not interested in devices like this, "good first effort" was my first impression on seeing the launch. The one significant weakness that would be of most concern to me were I a would-be user is the other area pcmag ranks Onyx higher in - a wider range of note export options. THAT seems to me to be really important, and the limited and fragile nature of the Elipsa's options seems odd to me.

A very useful summary - his raves about the display quality almost have ME tempted now. Especially since one of his cons is not really a Kobo issue, the inability to annotate DRMd pdfs is the choice of the PDFs' creator, really.

I've never understood the desire to run Android apps on e-ink devices. Been there, done that on my Onyx and it just didn't cut it. If I want to run an Android app, I use a tablet.

[Enter rant mode.] Same here. The problem is that Android doesn't know about grayscale. So, for example, you can have an app that uses a color button that contrasts nicely with its surrounding background, but when it's mapped to the 16 levels of gray that e-ink provides, it may be awful. If there was some intelligent way of mapping all colors to black and white then it might work. Or if the Android API provided a way to specify colors when on an e-ink device.

And I tried some Android e-reader apps and some started with a sort of yellowed paper background on the books, which was horrible on e-ink.

And, besides, for me an e-ink device is for things that are mostly static and don't frequently change what's displayed.
