?? If I wasn't been abundantly clear: I think the device is overall very readable, grey scale is tricky where it conflicts with the app UI design.

Thanks - there is an in-app boox setting to "whiten apps background" which will "optimize the contrast of background, icons, and fonts" - I had this turned on for better readability of the texts I had checked out via Hoopla, but I turned it off again and was able to find the search bar. I'll just have to remember that I need to toggle this on and off.

Not completely sure, but seems you can customize that per-application.
