IMO, a lot of the answers here are missing the point that while for the enthusiasts, Kindles may well not be the best, for the majority of users and potential users, who are looking for a quick and easy route to eReading, the Kindle ‘eco-system’ is a hard challenge to beat.
While device vs device may not make it definitive, they’re “decent enough” devices and things like KU, ease of purchasing, etc, all tend to influence the overall judgements towards Amazon.

I still find this very widespread and oft-repeated assertion difficult to understand. It implies that buying a kobo, turning it on, buying a book, then reading it is somehow less "quick and easy" than the exact same process on a Kindle. Having done it on both, I find no difference between how "quick and easy" the process is. It's also just as easy to buy a Kobo as it is to buy a Kindle.

The only significant difference would be Kindle Unlimited, and I'd love to see stats on how many Kindle users do use this versus those who don't. Certainly in my country, it was such poor value that I dropped it without regrets after 3 months, long before I ever thought of buying a Kobo.

Not quite the definitive stats I was hoping for. A somewhat smaller sample size than is optimal.

I bought a Kobo Glo HD and used it for a year. The process of side-loading books isn't not nearly as "quick and easy" as it is with a Kindle.

I usually read several books per week, many borrowed from KU or the library. There is no wireless method for side-loading with the Glo, so I had to connect via USB every-time I wanted to load a new book. After a year, I went back to Kindle and sold the Kobo.

The only feature I found superior on the Kobo was the screen light adjustment that could be done by swiping up-down on the left of the screen. I thought the added font options would be helpful, but rarely used them in day to day reading.

I also disliked the Kobo store, and Kobo book management (in your account online), in both design and function, it is sub-par when compared to Amazon.

When talking about an 8 year old reader, "that was then, this now" seems apt "wasn't as easy" would be more accurate than "isn't as easy". Especially since all recent Kobos do have Wifi. They also offer library access, including in many countries where Kindle does not.

The Glo had WiFi, I never said it didn't. Do current Kobe's support wireless delivery of non-Kobo books? Not library books, but books from other sources, such as books bought from Amazon and stored in Calibre?

Wireless delivery of side-loaded books is important to me. It wasn't possible on the Glo. Is it possible on current Kobos?

I have an H2O that's about 5.5 years old. I find side loading every bit as easy as a Kindle. I've sided loaded to KNT, K4, and PW3. What is it about your Glod Hd that you don't find quick and easy to side load.

Using Calibre, it's just as easy to side load to both Kobo and Kindle.

The Forma has Dropbox support. So you can load eBooks to your Dropbox and get them over WiFi.

I use calibre server to access my library over WiFi. I prefer this to having my books stored in someone else's cloud. This also saves me from having to email the books before I can access them but the privacy issue is equally important to me not to mention that I have more confidence in myself than in using my Kobo's DropBox connection.

Using the server requires having a computer online 24/7. Personally I don't keep any of my PCs constantly awake and online, so the server is not a viable solution for me.

My server needs to be up 24/7 so being constantly awake and online is a non-issue. The VMs on it include the firewall I use to protect my internal network, a DHCP/file/print server, a backup server, a honeypot server, etc.

And yes, it is a server using VMWare's ESXi hypervisor. Much less power hungry than when I was running the world's best 5 server 1 user network.

I might move the server into the cloud but for now having it on site is handy and a lot cheaper.

Wait...so you're *not* worried about storing things in the cloud anymore?? I thought the privacy issue was important to you?

You did notice that I said "might"? And yes, privacy is important to me which is why I still run a physical server to host my VMs.

There is a difference between running a VM in a data centre located in Canada and storing my data in a random data centre. The VMs will be encrypted as will the network connections and Canadian privacy laws will be complied with. This can include routing tables set up such that data only crosses the border if none of the preferred routes are accessible.

In contrast, what protection does an ebook stored in Amazon's cloud drive have? Do you know where it is stored? Who has access to that data? How is it protected from unauthorized access? Plus a miserly 5GB of storage?
