IMO, a lot of the answers here are missing the point that while for the enthusiasts, Kindles may well not be the best, for the majority of users and potential users, who are looking for a quick and easy route to eReading, the Kindle ‘eco-system’ is a hard challenge to beat.
While device vs device may not make it definitive, they’re “decent enough” devices and things like KU, ease of purchasing, etc, all tend to influence the overall judgements towards Amazon. |

The only significant difference would be Kindle Unlimited, and I'd love to see stats on how many Kindle users do use this versus those who don't. Certainly in my country, it was such poor value that I dropped it without regrets after 3 months, long before I ever thought of buying a Kobo. |

I bought a Kobo Glo HD and used it for a year. The process of side-loading books isn't not nearly as "quick and easy" as it is with a Kindle.
I usually read several books per week, many borrowed from KU or the library. There is no wireless method for side-loading with the Glo, so I had to connect via USB every-time I wanted to load a new book. After a year, I went back to Kindle and sold the Kobo. The only feature I found superior on the Kobo was the screen light adjustment that could be done by swiping up-down on the left of the screen. I thought the added font options would be helpful, but rarely used them in day to day reading. I also disliked the Kobo store, and Kobo book management (in your account online), in both design and function, it is sub-par when compared to Amazon. When talking about an 8 year old reader, "that was then, this now" seems apt "wasn't as easy" would be more accurate than "isn't as easy". Especially since all recent Kobos do have Wifi. They also offer library access, including in many countries where Kindle does not.

Wireless delivery of side-loaded books is important to me. It wasn't possible on the Glo. Is it possible on current Kobos? |

Using Calibre, it's just as easy to side load to both Kobo and Kindle. |

And yes, it is a server using VMWare's ESXi hypervisor. Much less power hungry than when I was running the world's best 5 server 1 user network. I might move the server into the cloud but for now having it on site is handy and a lot cheaper. |

There is a difference between running a VM in a data centre located in Canada and storing my data in a random data centre. The VMs will be encrypted as will the network connections and Canadian privacy laws will be complied with. This can include routing tables set up such that data only crosses the border if none of the preferred routes are accessible. In contrast, what protection does an ebook stored in Amazon's cloud drive have? Do you know where it is stored? Who has access to that data? How is it protected from unauthorized access? Plus a miserly 5GB of storage? Last edited by DNSB; 06-15-2020 at 10:37 AM. |
