More choice is better. It seems like people are always split 50-50 on the matte vs. glossy debate.
On laptops and monitors, glossy is nice for better colors.

On a greyscale e-ink reader, I fail to see how glossy is a benefit. Even the PW4 isn't really glossy. It's just less matte compared to the PW3.

The PW4 popular because it's a Kindle which has a good mix of features and sells at an affordable price especially during frequent sales. I've got multiple of them (JB backups) but if a more matte display similar to PW3 was an option, I would've preferred that.

The display of the PW3 is better then the PW4. That's because of the flush screen of the PW4. My guess is that the PW4 is the same flush screen as the PW3 but the light layer and/or the touch layer is away from the screen to make it flush and that is making the screen less clear.

Yeah, since all these readers use screens from e-ink, most readers from the last couple of generations use the same screen, right?

Far as I understand, the Kindle Paperwhite 3, 4, Voyage, first Oasis, 2015 Glowlight Plus, Glowlight 3, Kobo Glo HD and Clara all use the same 300 ppi Carta screen. Though some implement it better. The Voyage likely looks the best and the Glowlight 3 screen looks great.

I have heard the Paperwhite 4's flush screen doesn't look as good as the Paperwhite 3's recessed screen.

Since the Voyage had a flush screen and seemed to be the best, I'm curious why nobody else has been able to replicate it?

I do wonder how the Voyage and Glowlight 3 screens compare.

Not possible. It's the same 300DPI screen that the PW3 and PW4 use.

There's not an e-ink screen with a higher pixel count.

Here's the Kindle Voyage specs from C|Net: Pixel Density (ppi) 300

I just think it's better surface materials and better quality control. When Kindle originally came out with the Voyage I think they considered it the "ultimate" eReader and put a lot of effort into making it the best. If they came out with one now with warm light, I still think it would do well. I don't think there will another eReader built this well again though.

I tried a Glowlight 3 for about a week (while waiting for return authorization when Shop Goodwill sent me the wrong item). My opinion is that the screen isn't quite as good as the Voyage, but very close. The Voyage just seems a bit sharper. That said, it's hard to compare a "warm" light eReader with one of the old standard lit ones. Even when you try to make the "warm" light reader a "cold" light reader, the illumination is different somehow.

I don't know why the Voyage was so good. I'm guessing quality control and high quality materials.

The screen itself is the same though. I seem to remember hearing that the overlay on the Voyage was glass*, whereas on most readers it is plastic. I wonder if that is the difference?

*not the substrate. The layer that is placed on top of the actual e-ink screen is what I am referring to.

Taking a closer look at the Tolino Vision 4 HD (which also has a flush glass surface) and the Voyage, and I'm no longer sure the difference is that prominent. To me, the Vision 4 renders the fonts better and it allows me to read across the whole (though in the pictures I've brought the margin in a notch to match the Voyage).

(Sorry for the terrible pictures. I'm never going to get at this.)

The Vision looks MUCH better. At the very least, the frontlight on the Vision is better than the one on your Voyage.

Where did you pick up the Vision 4 HD and, if it's not too tacky, how much was it? And how does the orange light compare to the Glowlight 3 which is much better than the Clara?

I got it from GoodyStore on eBay for about $39 with shipping. Extremely lucky, but (at the time) they had two or three of them sell at about that price (this was before the Vision 4 was replaced with the Vision 5 (Libra H2O hardware clone)). GoodyStore is weird in that, whatever Tolino they get in stock, it usually sells for about $30 to $40, despite the fact that the Vision 4 HD should have sold for about $70 at the time.

As for comparing it to the Glowlight 3, it's more of an amber light (less orange), but very nice an even. The Shine 3 (Clara hardware clone) screen is oranger and looks a lot more like the Glowlight 3. I like both, but I like the amber of the Vision 4 more. (I'll see if I can find a camera that will actually not try to adjust out the orange or amber — it's frustrating not to be able to show it. BTW, I always read with the amber (warm) light on. I just adjusted it to the cold side of the lighting in an attempt to match the Voyage.

It's nearly impossible to compare the Tolino to the Voyage when the photos are blurry. Do you have access to a better camera?

I've got a real digital camera somewhere. I'll have to dig it up and charge the battery. But even if I took pictures on my phone with more light they would have looked better than what they did.

I hardly ever don't use the Tolino 4 in non-warm mode, so I didn't realize how well it compared to the Voyage until yesterday evening. It was a comment by ZodWallop that made me look into that a little closer. Honestly I expected the Voyage to look significantly better than the Vision 4. It didn't turn out that way.

Does the warm mode make the Tolino look bad? If anything it should make it look better. So a warm Tolino should look better than a Voyage if the non warm does. Or am I missing something?
