I still read and buy books. Admittedly I hadn't been going much, but I saw our local, long-time used bookstore had been bought out in December 2019. I went today actually. I've been three times this year to do some book browsing, especially for classic mysteries and to support the store. It helped my mood today because I was kind of down. Was something different. That said, I'm pickier on new books to own now since I have so many, and do also read quite a bit digitally

The last time I bought a book was also the 1st time I bought a "coffe table" book which I have never done before. (So you can see it was really an exception)
It was a photographers publication: http://www.dowlingphotography.com/redhead-beauty/

I think that one solution towards the preservation of the role of bookstores should be that dealing with them should not exclude, but instead facilitate the acquisition of the electronic formats. This would be granted if the purchase of a printed copy of a text implied the right of access to its electronic version. In fact, such systems already exist: there exist editions which allow downloading the electronic format upon presentation of a proof of purchase of the printed format. This way, one could enter the store, visit, enjoy the relevant benefits etc., and at the same time not be presented with an alternative "paper vs electronic".

I expanded on this concept, originally meant for this thread, on the first post at
The right to own electronic copies of texts after buying printed copies

Online shops that sell eBooks are also bookstores.

Drop it, please. You’ve made the same or similar point over and over. When someone’s meaning is entirely clear, roll with it, perhaps with a silent (or spoken) “Tsk, tsk.” Nitpicking serves no purpose whatsoever other than to irritate.

Jon, I only got the formula 'bookstores you walk in' hours after posting. And I did not find it the most pressing matter in expressing my concept, because I saw my point clear and unambiguous - but for you. Could you please stick to the point?

EDIT: I would really be delighted if you could contribute /to the actual matter/. Lee walks in a shop, and says "This is more part of my past than of my present, I do not regret it, I gained a lot, but something is missing from this present".

I do like browsing bookstores that sell pBooks. Sometimes I use them to find something I may want to read. But I won't buy the pBook. I'll buy the eBook.

Not every book I want to read is available as an ebook; on occasion, print copies are cheaper if both formats exist.

A major drawback of print-only copies is the cost of shipping. Seldom an issue for those in the US, but for those many thousands of kilometers away, it's far from uncommon for shipping charges on a paper book to be 3-4 times the cost of the book itself. One more reason I avoid paper books.
