I've installed Frostshutz's MiniClock mod, using these options on a KA1:

truetype=dejavu_sans.ttf
truetype_size=8
truetype_x=5
truetype_y=10

(And I uploaded the DevaVu Sans font in the MiniClock folder, as it's not provided by default.)

It puts the clock in the top left.

Always wanted a feature like that. I also like the fact that the clock can be configured in 24-hour format, independent from the reader. (It sets the clock to a format belonging to the language you choose; in my case, it gets set to AM/PM because I use the reader in English.)

Maybe I'll reposition the clock to the lower left or right corner, but I don't know yet.

I also installed two patches: reduce header and footer height (they're huge, by default, especially the footer), and "increase kepub chapter progression chart".

I've also installed the Invert Screen patch, replacing the EPUB page number setting in the menu. Works great. I wouldn't have thought so at first, because the entire screen stays lit even if this function is enabled. Even so, it drastically cuts back on brightness.

Instead of a blinding white background with black text, the background is now a very dark grey with white text. It makes reading in almost darkness better. (I sometimes want to read in bed while my GF wants to go to sleep.)

The only drawback is that I need to increase the font one step because in inverted mode, the white font seems to be smaller. It's probably an optical illusion, in the same category of those of Go stones on a Go playing board:

"Black stones are slightly larger in diameter to compensate for optical illusion of the white stones appearing larger when placed with black stones of the same diameter."

In case you're interested you don't actually need to have a separate copy of your .ttf in the MiniClock folder. You could use this to point at a .ttf already in your /fonts directory.
Code:
truetype=/mnt/onboard/fonts/your_fontfile.ttf

I don't know of any way to completely replace either/both the 2 main Kobo GUI system fonts, Georgia and Avenir, with better unicode fonts. Is that the gist of your question?

If 'yes' ... it is possible to patch (via kobopatch) various parts of the GUI with your sideloaded font of choice. I'm working on a couple of new ones at the moment to allow you to specify a custom font for the new header/footer and also in the new navigation 'scrubber' where the TOC/chapter name button now is. There's already a long-standing patch called 'Change pop-up footnote font-family' for kepub pop-ups.

Which parts of the GUI are you most concerned about?

Is there a way to disable the touch screen function on the forma the same way it can be done on the Kindle Oasis? I am somewhat yearning for that feature, it works great against accidental presses.

The three items which appear under the ellipsis submenu at the top right are View Details, Dictionary, and Reading Progress. Without having to click on this ellipsis icon you can instead click on the magnifying glass icon to get to a dictionary search with a single click.

This means that the Dictionary link in the submenu is redundant, and the ellipsis submenu could be replaced by two icons that link directly to book details and reading progress. Instead they require users to click twice to show the reading progress, and then another two times to hide the reading progress before selecting anything else from the menu.

This is an asinine design choice from the perspective of usability.

Right; I don't like the two clicks needed to open the progression chart either. Not even counting that the space along the top of the page is huge and would hold 2-4 extra icons easily. It's the one thing I find to be a step backward from the previous firmware.

BTW: does anyone know if it's possible to have a larger font for the header and footer text? I set the Miniclock size to 8, and this font is even smaller than that.

Oh, wait:

Cool

The font itself is OK, I'd only like it to be a tad larger.

Thanks for pointing this out

I don't use DejaVu Sans for reading. (It didn't work on the Kindle without hacking it.) Maybe I should enable the Font Freedom patch and start trying some of my favorite fonts on the KA1 such as the Dejavu and Open Sans series.

Yes, this particular new one will allow you to change font-size and/or font-family. I was also hoping to be able to add the cosmetic ability to un-force the UPPERCASE of header/footer. I thought this would be trivial ... it isn't (sigh).

I now also have a few other general GUI things under consideration, mainly for users whose language is not well-served by Kobo's 2 default system fonts, Georgia (serif) and Avenir (sans-serif).

I don't really want to release these new patches until I've got my thoughts together about the best way to organise everything. I want to avoid another 'Home screen wars' fiasco where there were a few patches that did similar things and no-one was quite sure which ones to enable so they enabled multiple conflicting ones.

OTOH you've mentioned in the past that you have visual problems so if you're really struggling I could knock up a quick-and-dirty that should suffice until I can release the real thing. PM me if you need to do that.

I can probably do something about that (it's likely to be as simple as a NOP or two for me).

If needed, I'll make a demo for them when I have time.

You do not want to disable the touch screen. You can change the settings so an accidental touch doesn't turn the page. If you turn off the touch screen, you won't be able to get out of your eBook or for that matter, get into it.

Go to Settings > Reading settings and change Page forward and back by: and set it to Swiping only. That way you need to swipe to change the page and not just a tap.
