Doesn’t an Instant Pot free up more reading time?

Thanks, and Black Friday is just two months later. What's the point if it's going to be that late?

I don't think they have much choice. There won't be enough supply of anything to offer discounts. I frequently check the daily deals for Computers and Accessories. Before the lockdowns there would be 8-10 pages of deals including PC's, laptops, monitors, networking gear, storage etc. That shrank to a fraction of one page, maybe a charging cable or tablet cover or two. Prices on storage e.g. have risen substantially. Whatever deals they could scrounge up would sell out quickly and leave hordes of unhappy customers. It makes more sense for them to squeeze as much profit as they can from their limited supply. Pent-up demand could keep prices high for a while - I'll be surprised if even Black Friday amounts to much this year.

On the bright side, digital content is mostly unaffected and there have been some nice deals there to fill the void...

I know, that's why it might be better to just skip Prime Day this year and only do Black Friday.

Part of that was on purpose, with Amazon doing fewer deals and promotions to try and encourage people to purchase less. They were struggling to keep up with increased demand because orders went way up as most people started staying at home and avoiding shopping in physical stores.

Amazon’s traditional Mother’s Day and Father’s Day deals have been canceled, and the company’s famed Prime Day deals extravaganza has been delayed indefinitely. Amazon has also removed recommendation boxes from its item pages which show shoppers what other related products people bought, according to the report.

“We typically want to sell as much as we can, but our entire network is so full right now with just hand sanitizers and toilet paper that we don’t have the capacity to serve other demand,” an Amazon employee told the paper.

They plan ahead for big sales to have increased stock of items. Even if the extra stock they planned to have ready for Prime Day (their hardware devices in particular) was delayed because of the pandemic, that stock will be still be delivered before the Black Friday shopping season. They need to try and clear that stock out of their warehouses before Black Friday to make space for all the extra stuff they have coming for Black Friday.

Amazon delays Prime Day until October due to coronavirus

What's the point in having it in October when Black Friday is just a month and a half later?

Quote:
Amazon gave third-party sellers a placeholder date of the week of Oct. 5 for Prime Day, according to an email obtained by CNBC.

The company has delayed its annual shopping event several times in recent months due to coronavirus-related constraints.

Amazon has been working to return its logistics operations to normal after it was hit with a wave of online orders at the height of the pandemic, which resulted in delivery delays and inventory shortages.
Quote:
Amazon is postponing its marquee shopping event Prime Day until at least early October.

The company had previously targeted September as the potential timing for Prime Day, but on Wednesday, Amazon informed third-party sellers that the date could be pushed back another month, according to the email, which was viewed by CNBC and first reported by Business Insider.

The email advises sellers to use the week of Oct. 5 as a “placeholder date” for Prime Day promotions and coupons, but cautions that “exact Prime Day dates have not been announced.”

“A definitive date will be announced as we get closer to the event,” the email states. “We are looking forward to seeing submissions that offer the most delight to customers during one of the biggest shopping days of the year, Prime Day!”

An Amazon spokesperson told CNBC in a statement: “We have not made any announcements regarding Prime Day.”

Dell is having a decent sale on PC stuff now - I had been waiting for PD and BF but decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on one of their Ultrasharp monitors at 25% off. Not that great but with people outfitting their home offices these days maybe as good as it gets for this year...

With so many states having a resurgence of Covid 19, Amazon might have to cancel Prime Day all together.

Probably hoping to clear out stock just in time for Black Friday stuff, but sure seems to be cutting it really close.

Yep, I think they may have to cancel Black Friday as well. That's going to hurt a lot of retailers if it happens. Not to mention the service industry (restaurants) are screwed even worse.

What Will Prime Day 2020 Look Like With Amazon’s Inventory Restrictions?

Quote:
This week, Amazon AMZN -1.3% announced inventory restrictions whereby third party sellers will generally be restricted to stocking approximately three months worth of inventory at Amazon fulfillment centers. The restrictions have incredibly awkward timing: the most-likely (and still officially unconfirmed) date for Prime Day is sometime in October, less than three months away at time of publication.

Prime Day, Amazon’s made-up shopping holiday, has predictably run every July since 2015. Variations on the theme have occurred - the duration of the event, the price that brands pay to run deals, the exact date in July that the holiday fell. But in 2020, all sense of tradition has been thrown out the window. Here are four predictions as to what Prime Day will look like in 2020.
Quote:
1. Amazon devices and subscriptions will be front and center this Prime Day

2. Amazon private label brands will also be in focus

3. Many national brands will hold out for the ‘Turkey Five’ event

4. Some brands will shift back to merchant-fulfilled offers

What Will Prime Day 2020 Look Like With Amazon’s Inventory Restrictions?

Quote:
The usual timeline of a July Prime Day was clearly not going to happen. Initially, the date was rumored to be in September. This month, Amazon told third party sellers that it would be held the week of October 5. This October timing is troublesome for many brands for several reasons:

Proximity to the Black Friday / Cyber Monday shopping holiday.
There are only 50-something days between an estimated Prime Day date and Black Friday. This gives brands little time to restock between major shopping events. Many brands have supply chains which require 60 days or more for ordering inventory. As it stands, Amazon’s cutoff to have inventory at its fulfillment centers is September 11, a mere 58 days away.

Back to school shoppers will miss Prime Day as a major stock-up event.
That said, with in-person education in a state of flux, the back to school rush was always going to look unusual in 2020.

Missing out on a summertime sales boost.
For many brands, Prime Day provides a welcome boost to the summer sales dip. 2020 saw all kinds of market forces interrupting regular shopper behavior - including stimulus checks and stay-at-home orders - which would have invariably had some impact on summertime sales. Still, many brands have come to rely on a July Prime Day sale to clear out inventory and pick up the pace during a historically slow season.
