It's looking hopeful. Someone at one of the Good Reads forums ("Will buy the Nook GlowLight 3") claims to have had a GlowLight 3 hooked up to his computer and it showed 6.5 GB of available space. Also someone quoted a Nook Rep saying that the full 6.5 GB of storage was available for either Nook books or sideloading. But I'm still wondering what ".95 GB external storage" means in context.

Quote:
I asked B&N customer service. Here is their reply:

We would like to inform you that the NOOK GlowLight 3 have the maximum memory/storage of 8GB. The 6.5GB storage will not be partitioned to NOOK Store and side-loaded content. You can fill it with your side-loaded content or purchased book on the NOOK Shop.

And ...

I like the light, and the physical buttons are better than before, but there is a big problem. Of the 8gb of memory, only .95 is available externally. I side load all my media, so this is a deal breaker.

How did you determine this? I have the Nook plugged in right now and it shows 6.5 GB available.

Well, I am free today, and I plan to go to my B&N store. If I like what I see, I'll take a Glowlight 3 home with me. If so, I'll post my first impressions later today. Then, feel free to ask any questions!

I have one!

First piece of news: in Storage, there is only one listing, not two: "5.46 gb out of 6.35 gb available". No separation between Nook store and sideloaded items. Once my Nook is fully charged, I will explore that some more.

Second piece of news: as someone else said, tapping the Nook icon in Settings-About brings up access to developer options. That could open the door to ADB and installing apps, like the Glowlight Plus. We shall see.

First impression: it looks and feels very much like an upgraded NST. To me, that's a plus. It's a bit larger than the NST, but feels very light, and is a pleasure to hold. Text is clear, as one would expect. I like the buttons. The click is present, but I don't think that will be an issue for me. (And I have a noise sensitivity - but YMMV.) There is a slight delay between a button press and a page turn. That could become even less as the device breaks in. Lighting looks even. I like the color adjustment.

The display is somewhat recessed, but that isn't an issue for me. That only means that cleaning the display might take slightly more effort. So far, it looks good.

The 3 is also downloading a firmware upgrade even as I write.

I'll add more later.

Oh - the folks at the B&N store told me that they will have covers for the 3 in a couple of weeks.

Edit: After the firmware upgrade, now my device is showing, under Storage, those two headings, with the 0.95 gb for sideloaded material. I'll find out later what that means.

Can you please plug it into a computer and see how much is available on the drive?

0.95GB out of 8GB for side loading is just pathetic. They did away wiith the partitioned memory for the previous model. Why bring it back? Nobody wants it.

Do you realize that the Sony software uses an old version of RMSDK that won't work with Google Play books and won't work with Overdrive? You need to have ADE 2.0.1. Any earlier version and you may not be able to download your ePub and any later version and you risk getting an ePub with hardened DRM that cannot be removed and may not work with some Readers.

It appears that the sideloading capability of the 3 is indeed limited. When i plug it into my Mac, I see the "Nook" drive, 1.02 gb.

Why would B&N want to cripple the NG3? What made them decide to change it from uncrippled to crippled?

I have no idea. B&N has no reason that I can see to do this. Perhaps the majority of people who will buy this device might not care. But most folks here would like to be able to use the full amount of storage for Nook books and sideloaded books.

It's not a deal-breaker for me, but it's one more way that B&N shoots itself in the foot and gives some potential customers one more reason to look elsewhere. Not the most brilliant marketing strategy.

That said, I like this device as an eBook reader so far. It could have been that much better, if B&N just got out of the way and chose not to shoot itself in the foot! Too much to ask?

I should've checked storage on my laptop before the update! But, too late now. If anyone else buys the 3, check it before the update installs.

I realize you think that as you have mentioned that a gazillion times. Do you realize I use Sony Reader for PC to download epubs from Overdrive (and several different libraries) and it works perfectly?

The day it stops to work I will switch to something else.
