It turned out that we moved out-of-state in the middle of third grade, and I didn't have an opportunity to claim them, didn't get around to it, whatever. It's annoyed me ever since. ha
I can top that. While working electronics at a Wal-mart, some little boy (probably about 10/11) came in to buy a PS2. The boy obviously had some kind of learning disability, or mental disability, but he knew he wanted that PS2 and had a big ziplock bag full of mostly coins.

So I count it all up and he has just barely enough, but that included a $10 gold coin from the late 1800s. (I forget the exact year.) I pointed out to the woman who was accompanying the kid that the coin was likely worth way more than $10. I told the kid that too. He didn't understand, he just wanted the PS2. The lady was just like "it's his money." After another round of failed attempts, I sold him the PS2 and took the gold coin at face value.

I bought it out of the register immediately and kept it. The coin's in near-mint condition and to this day I still wonder how he ended up with it. I also still want to slap that woman for letting the boy screw himself over. She could have put in $10 and had the coin sold, taking her $10 back at that point. But nooooooo, she just didn't give a flip about the boy.

I got about 450 books I believe (haven't done an exact count). It was maybe 5-6 pages shy of all the science fiction and fantasy ones. If it'd lasted longer, I was going to grab all the non-fiction, romance (for my mom), westerns, and mysteries. Oh well, I still got a bunch of books, so I'm not complaining. Realistically I'll never read all the ones I got.

Me neither. I think my total was a bit over 2200 - I just clicked and changed pages mindless while watching TV (over a couple of nights). I only had 1200 or so in my first search, though, so went back and grabbed all the Sci-Fi/Fantasy, then Romance (smaller group!) and was working on the Mystery when I fell asleep. By the next evening, it was over, so I missed quite a few in that category.

Not that I'll ever get thru all the ones I have, but our family has differing reading interests, so there are quite a few I won't read that someone else will.

At list or current selling value, that's roughly $20K in books - assuming some aren't at $10 and several are above (quite a bit of the Non-Fiction went that high after the sale ended).

Now, multiply that by how many thousands of people heard about the sale.... Even the more restrained pick up well over a grand in books, ad they paid full retail, with most in the several thousand range, from what I've seen.

I personally and publicly would like to thank dandelioncottage for starting this thread and making the O.P. Someone else eventually would have posted this Open Road Media sale, but she probably helped everyone get a head start on grabbing all of the bargains.

I gave her karma for her O.P., but it wasn't nearly commensurate with the significance of the find, as it turns out. Of course, I'm locked out of giving karma to the same post twice. Dandelion, I'll catch up in my next karma to you! Thanks!

You're all very welcome, and thanks for the karma! I'm always happy to ensure that everyone else's TBR list is as overwhelming as mine.

That's an understatement if there ever was one. a pre-1933 $10 Gold Eagle is half an ounce of gold, or about $600 in melt value. The coins go up from there, and depending on year and quality, way, WAY up ($50K or more for the very rarest and best).

Ouch...

Although I had noted down some of the recommendations folks made for sci-fi/fantasy authors as part of the Open Road freebie extravaganza, I never made it to the sci-fi after the mysteries and non-fiction. However, one of the titles in today's Open Road/Early Bird daily sale is one of the omnibuses mentioned by Little.Egret, The Lyra Novels, by Patricia C. Wrede. The individual titles are listed in Little.Egret's post below too.

It is $3.99 for the rest of the year at the usual US retailers, and it's couponable/VIPable at Kobo US. So I snagged it, and somehow I don't even mind giving Open Road some money!

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0092G1BOC
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/sha...the-raven-ring

Happy New Year everyone!!!
