Liking it so far. The brightness sensor seems a little over sensitive -- sitting near a window (3 or 4 feet way) and it seems to want to visibly go up and down as a bit of cloud goes by. Didn't really think I'd use that anyway. The natural light is a little different to what I expected. It definitely changes the tone but much more subdued than some of the pictures would suggest if you are in a bright room. It really does get red if it's in low light. I think I like it.
Size is great and it feels as light and better balanced than my H2O. I used to read one handed on my H2O and it's maybe a little harder on the Aura One because my thumb always was against the device with the H2O (just tipped edge down to change pages). With the One since I need thumb off the device to tap and the slightly bigger size it's harder to keep it from flopping around a bit. That might change as I adapt to it. Responsiveness seems quite good and that's coming from someone who typically hates capacitive touch. I normally tap and this works well. When I just tried swiping it wasn't quite as good, but that might just be because I don't normally swipe. Lighting is very even. If there is light coming from side (i.e. window) it can cast a small shadow from edge of the device down into the screen, other than that no particular shadow. At the bottom of the screen there can be a little bit of smudging from the lights, but barely noticable and may depend on brightness/natural light settings as I really can't see it now but I know I did before. Power button takes some getting used to since you almost need to squeeze the screen to use it rather than the flick with the old. Overall size difference feels like when I went from 6" to 6.8". Boy is it ever nice. The H2O looks sooooo small now. Funny how 24 hours ago it was a great reader and now it's just meh ![]() |

Mine is in transit too, from Chapters. From Canada to Australia, the trip of a lifetime! Maybe they've sold out? Isn't it nice that they've made a great ereader from listening to us nerds. I love you Kobo!

My parents have a laptop that they never unplugged from the socket. When I tried to borrow it and take it out, there was absolutely 0 charge available for portable uses. Charging a battery is indeed dangerous! Whouldve thort

But, if they decided that overall battery life is the most important, then they will have set the 100% lower and the 0% higher. That gives longer overall life but shorter runtime. And that means if you manage the battery within the 70% to 30% range, you get even shorter runtime. And that brings me back to my original statement: Forget about it and just use the battery as needed. |

For your ereaders, plug them in and try to recharge them. If they do recharge, everything should be OK. If they don't, it means the battery has discharged to much and the protection circuit kicked in. The battery shouldn't be used. Once you have recharged your ereaders, test the devices are all still working and then power them off before storing them. If the devices are off, they shouldn't draw any current and the batteries should last a long time. For the older devices, you might want to check in a month to see the charge level. The older the battery, the faster the charge will drop. * Technically, it probably isn't an explosion, but from the pictures I've seen it looks like one. And yes, knowing that means I have watched far to many episodes of Mythbusters. |

Last night I had the opportunity to read in the dark, all lights closed. Setting the red hue at about 30-50% did make it easier on the eyes, and when I finished, I had no afterimage of the screen burned into my retinas.
So I'm pleasantly surprised by that feature, because I didn't expect anything from it at the start. The automatic setting of the red light is completely off though, it turned the screen completely red/orange. |

When I turned it on 90' later it was at 48%! I then started to read. When I controlled it 30' later, it was at 28%, and the Sync ... Cancelled was back. So I slid the light and comfort light controls back to manual, turned the One off and put it to charge. When done, I turned it off. When I turned it on this morning, the Sync button was ok, and it was still at 100%. Could it be the light controls which sync to verify the hour before adjusting the comfort light and manage it badly? |

@anacreon: Wait for the firmware update. The firmware version you have is from fairly early in the 3.20.x builds. The release version will have had an extra two months of development and I believe will have removed the problems you are seeing.
As to the comment about the automatic light controls, I doubt if they are triggering a sync. But, there is probably a process running to manage them. If that was checking the time and adjusting things to often, then it could use a lot of CPU. So, if it checks every hour and sleeps in between, very little CPU and hence little battery. If it checked every microsecond, lots of CPU and battery use. It will be somewhere in between and might even change depending on the time of day (more often near sunrise/sunset, rarely near noon). I could see the automatic sync causing a problem for the light. When it wakes the device, the light comes on and the automatic light stuff would kick in. Maybe something was getting confused with this and not sleeping quickly afterwards. Or even problems because the cover was closed and the sensors covered. Hopefully they have thought about this, but it is something that could need work to get right. |

Bummer pickyaxe! When did you order yours? And why did you wait? :P I ordered mine a couple of hours after it was available, was surprised it shipped immediately as I thought it was just a pre-order...perhaps it IS really just a pre-order but Chapters missed the memo originally? When are you expecting the device? Shouldn't whinge really but... I have to spend an entire weekend reading on my Kindle Paperwhite 2 now! *cries* The horror! My life resembles a Stephen King novel more and more with each passing day. I want my blood-red Aura One! I wonder if Michael Tamblyn reads these forums, he's such a hottie *woof woof* Last edited by cerem0ny; 09-02-2016 at 04:50 AM. |

I hope my battery problem will be resolved. The home page is now all in French, which looks better. I'm disappointed the reading list has disappeared, I was beginning to understand how it works and really liked it. It appears this is a version for countries with no Overdrive access, even though the number is the same (specifics c213e8a341): no mention in the parameters, and there is no more "articles" list with everything mixed. Now the buttons bottom left have been simplified: * lire (read) = books, collections, pocket articles (on my 3.15 Glo HD bibliothèque = books, extracts, my collections, pocket articles) * parcourir (browse) = overview, recommended, to selection, categories (3.15 bookshop = home page, recommended for you, categories, recommended, wish list) * activité = reading stats, récompenses (3.15 suppléments = reading stats, récompenses) The dictionary has disappeared from the home page, but it blessedly reappeared within the book AND though the default is English, even within a French book, French IS accessible, which it wasn't anymore, even in 3.15, though I still don't see Nederlands (which I used for my Littré). The French dictionary is the 2013 Robert micro instead of the 2008 Larousse, which should be better but I'll have to test it. It doesn't seem to have improved the reactivity: calling the collections, from the home page or the books page is way too long. Last edited by anacreon; 09-02-2016 at 05:38 AM. |
