For those interested: it's about a man who slowly loses himself to Alzheimer's. It's translated into English as 'Out of Mind' by J. Bernlef.

The Dutch version is available as an ebook, but it doesn't look like the English version is. Only a short book (the Dutch version is 188 pages) but very much worth the read.

If a book is relevant now, I see no reason why it cannot be used. If it becomes not relevant sometime in the future, a different book can be used.

How does one define a relevant book?

There 9, because you wrote it in a line. Bad habit to mix "%" and "/" at same time, but not illegal. If you wanted to have "1/3" meaning a fraction, then you must write it "(1/3)" because:

Code:
    1 1
3 % - = 3 % ( - ) = 3 % ( 1 / 3 ) = 3 × ( 3 / 1 ) = 3 × 3 = 9
    3 3

        vs.

3 % 1 / 3 = 3 % 1 % 3 = ( 3 % 1 ) ÷ 3 = 1
Because left to right always on same hierachy.

That was exactly how that question was written on a test.
Why I thought I would put it here since we have been discussing both reading and math here.

I do agree badly written.
I would have liked 9-3÷.33+1
Oh wait that doesn't work because of the first division sign.

(1) 9–3÷⅓+1=9

(2) Kids should be taught the classics, but modern writers and and stories that encourage reading simply because they are enjoyable should not be ignored. Balance is everything.

How do you get the answer 9?

I'd interpret the above as:

9 - (3÷⅓) + 1

= 9 - 9 + 1

= 1

Oops! You're correct. I mistakenly multiplied 3 by ⅓ rather than divided 3 by ⅓, a very elementary mistake. 😱

If anyone else thinks that the answer is something other than "1", can you explain your reasoning, please?

I would read those as the same (other than the answer, of course). How do you get the second one to come out as 9?

The original problem as posted is:
9-3÷1/3+1
I interpreted it as:
9-(3%1)/3+1
9-(3)/3+1
9-1+1
8+1
9

The "/" means division in a math problem. So...when I did the problem using order of operations, I did the first division problem (3/1), then the second division problem (3/3), then the subtraction, then the addition.

The correct way to write the problem would be:
9-3%(1/3)+1

In that case, the 1/3 would have been the first calculation, so that it would be:
9-3%(1/3)+1
9-3%.33+1
9-9+1
0+1
1

Two completely different math problems.
