I see a problem for instance with Vingt années de Paris by André Gill, epub version with images. After selecting Kobo Tsukushi Mincho, I cannot select any other font (or rather I can select, but the selection does not get applied). As I reported yesterday I did not see the problem with some other books.

Okay, I found that a stack log was created at some point, just not at the time of the initial problem, and I am able to reproduce it consistently on an unpatched device with these steps:
Initial state: No patches, no undocumented FeatureSettings active, wi-fi off, database size 63.7MB, 799 books, 18 sideloaded fonts. 1. Power off and on again (to start with a clean slate) 2. Open a KePub book (I used this one, bought and synced from Kobo) 3. Select Kobo Tsukushi Mincho, Kobo UD Kakugo, OpenDyslexic, Malabar, Amasis 4. Tap home to close the KePub book 5. Open a DRM-free ePub book (I used Timescape by Gregory Benford, 401 pages, no embedded fonts) 6. Select Kobo Tsukushi Mincho font 7 Swipe to turn a page (at this point the book closed and was marked finished) 8. Open the ePub book again (It displays a blank page) 9. Open Aa menu, select Amasis 10. Tap home to close the ePub book The stack log was produced after step 8 or 9 I think (it is not there after step 7, at least.) Who can I sent it to? Spoiler:
Edit: To explain, I don't think opening the KePub is related to the problem, it is just an easy reproducable way of allocating some resources to simulate the state the device would be in after a bit of ordinary use. Edit2: The stack log is not produced if I remove my sideloaded fonts, but the problem remains unchanged. I've sent the info to a Kobo representative. Last edited by GeoffR; 12-10-2015 at 07:08 PM. Reason: ... if I remove my sideloaded fonts ... |

The font file in question is KBJ-TsukuMinPr6N-RB.ttf (154 141 28 Bytes). I mention it for the unlikely case that your font has a different file size. |

[General] affiliate=BestBuyCA The file is located in the .kobo directory. After that you should be getting the newest firmware as soon as it's released. So if you have your wifi on often, you could get the update before you want it (say if there's a particular bug that bothers you in the newest firmware). If you only put wifi on when you want to update, it's not an issue. |

The problem with the Kobo Tsukushi Mincho font, and why I suggested Kobo must stop this update:
In this time,a lot of people buy ereaders for Saint Nicholas or for Christmas. Based upon what I see around me when people have a new e-reader: put a whole lot of books on it,start to play with the fonts to see which one is nice and which one isn't.. Then select the Kobo Tsukushi Mincho font and.. Bam.. But what also concerns me is, you buy an e-reader and like the fonts, they are a part of your deal..then whitin an update Kobo can decide to take away fonts, that are there at the moment you bought it. I do understand that most fonts have copyright and that you don't own it,but when you bought it,you got a license to use it that was paid, which Kobo can take away from you.. Is that legal ?? Take something away and just say, you got an other simular back ?? Last edited by Nick_1964; 12-11-2015 at 11:26 AM. |

And you'd be hard pressed to make any legal case you've lost anything of any value if fonts are changed. But perhaps, the reason these fonts were substituted was technical? I believe they're Chinese and Japanese language fonts - so perhaps they give better results with those languages. And fonts disappear and reappear on readers firmware all the time. The early Kobo firmwares have different fonts. Considering that firmware revisions are only taking away the fonts that are part of the system, and not side loaded - its a non-issue |

You can't always download them and sideloaded them.. (it's only theoretical what I say.. a principally question..) With the Dutch version of the Sony prs-t1 and prs-t2/3 you could take a cheaper version that has only one font.. download of the others was not possible or legal. But they give you the choice..do you want the model with the fonts,or don't. That it happens more times (first time that I notest in 2 years that I notice Kobo had a font removed) is not really an excuse in my opinion. Sure I don't make a case of it,i don't own so much money, but it is more a thought.. is it legal to remove something that you had when you buyed it ? It's almost certainly covered in the terms and agreements of the use of the ereader, likely in a simple clause of 'Rakuten Kobo can make changes to software features at any time without warning or notice'. Which would include fonts.
It can be frustrating if a font you enjoy is removed, but many fonts have free look-a-like fonts. As to the Kobo fonts, I believe most of the early ones can be found in the sticky of fonts, which I know has been looked over for fonts which are not we aren't allowed to share. |

It is a little more complex than saying that. Consumer law doesn't care what terms and agreements says, at least to a particular extent.
I will give an example that is perfectly tailored to explain this. Amazon released many advertisements about their type made for digital reading, Bookerly. If they suddenly remove Bookerly from their Kindles and Fires, you can request a return. If they say no (because of limitations and such), you can simply sue. But if they remove Baskerville, well, nothing to do. Such blanket terms aren't usually what they seem. Still, this has nothing to do with the topic. |

Does the showPageHeader=false Reading setting work anymore for anyone? It doesn't work for me anymore.
