thx GM, it appears I had a loose connection on TX, commencing step 4!
Honestly, I tried for 90 minutes to fix this issue without posting, 3 mins after I hit send I see the problem :P |

Success! Voyage 5.7.4 successfully Jailbroken.
I owe a big thanks to knc1, geekmaster, grant2, stupidhaiku - thanks for your prompt help and guides, guys. I'd like to delve further into the details soon, since there currently aren't many Voyage JBs out there. Unfortunately I need to disappear for the next week or two while I deal with some urgent life admin, but I will return. In the meantime, I can confirm that my experience was identical to stupidhaiku's Voyage JB, including his description of the (lack of) diags menu, post 22; '...with me interrupting boot then doing bootm 0xE41000. The boot then seemed to stop with the line "sock_init 1888". Note that I never got the diags menu that you show..' '...[So] I typed exit login and got the login prompt!' Thanks again everyone. Catch you soon, have a great week. Last edited by TheNeedforRead; 05-30-2016 at 10:43 AM. |

Hello all!
Finally I got everything soldered. One more question. Can I leave serial port connected(will it have place in kindle)? My usb-converter is https://www.pololu.com/product/1308 Thanks for the help which you've already shown! |

Yes - if you can find a place to put it.

Well, that is what the question was about
![]() Are there any ideas as to where I can find such place? Or just the brute force method with trying any location? I've seen one such example in first post, but there was only one photo ![]() |

No. I do not own a PW-2. No. Do not use brute force of any description. You might learn the hard way just how fragile an e-ink screen is. Every model is different, the frame details are not a standard layout across models. This section about installing the jim.sh/ftx board in a PW-3 might give you some ideas: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...5&postcount=14 |

Thanks for all the information in this thread!
Sorry this isn't that constructive: I'm not very good with electronics/hardware but I'm going to try this and buy the usb serial ttl connector. I'm looking at some cheap ones, they have rx, tx, vcc and ground, and it says it is 1.8v. I think that seems to cover everything needed. I'm just not sure if there are different types of ttl, etc. It should be ok? I can buy it for less than $1, so it's a good deal ![]() Thanks |

Will you be using the soldering method or the pin method? If you choose the soldering method, practice soldering on something else first if you have never done it. The pieces are tiny and if you solder in the wrong place, you could render your device unusable. Also the soldering iron is very hot and one touch can brand you. Just a little advice from someone who used to work on much bigger mother boards. |

So I'm not worried about soldering, just I am not confident about things like voltages/components, and wanted to know if 'any' ttl usb cable that is 1.8v, and has rx, tx, gnd, vcc, will be ok! ![]() Or, maybe there are different specifications of ttl that I have to worry about? @geekmaster - that picture is horrifying! glad to see you are back with us! And while discussing soldering, I was thinking of using aluminum foil on plastic for a K3 serial connector. Here is how to solder copper wire to aluminum foil (using oil flux):
Solder before gluing the foil to plastic, then slice out strips between the traces. Voila, aluminum foil PCB. Last edited by geekmaster; 06-13-2016 at 08:52 PM. |

Well now I guess you could if you had these. http://s7d1.scene7.com/is/image/BedB...=2000&qlt=50,1 Linking due to huge image. It is a set of Tuff gloves but I think it would be hard to manage the iron. Oh wait: those gloves are only rated to 450°. Do NOT try this anywhere. Editing so Don or HarryT don't yell at me. It seems she's also wearing UV safety glasses, which is not that useful for iron soldering... unless it's some sort of laser soldering iron?
That would explain the possibility of holding it this low. lol. (actually a laser gets super warm too!) Apparently they had 2 more models: http://petapixel.com/assets/uploads/...others-500.jpg |
