Wow.

It's not just that Dean Baquet, without histronics or character assassination, demolishes Jay Carney's "What The New York Times Didn’t Tell You." It's that Carney resorted to personal character assassination of an ex-employee.

Carney, a former White House press secretary, writes like he was back in the James Brady Briefing Room bashing the political opposition. I am disappointed to read nothing about how Amazon is working to make their company a more humane place to work.

I work for one of, if not the, largest privately-owned printer in the U.S., and it's run by the family of the founder, and employees are treated as family. It's a great place to work.

One notable company which I always feel good about purchasing from is Lee Valley, which has been in the news as a notable example of leveling the pay slope: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...ticle15472738/

I'd really like to see the pay slope published for all publicly held companies.

Amazon also does direct-to-hire for warehouse positions. You can verify this through job postings on their website.

Now to see Carney's response.
You don't hire Carney for one 1300 page rebuttal; you hire him to go to war.

Speaking of hires:

Amazon plans to hire 100,000 people for the holidays, a 25 percent jump from last year that reveals a shift in the way we shop.

The online retailer said Tuesday that it will be hiring across the country for jobs in its fulfillment and sorting facilities. The Seattle company recently hired more than 25,000 people for regular, full-time positions. It hired 80,000 workers last year for the holidays.
Doesn't sound like those 25,000 folks were scared off by the NYT:

Amazon stands out among retailers, with holiday hiring expected to remain largely unchanged, according to a report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

This seems to me a good example of Wrestling Big Ideas in a Bruising Workplace.
