My problem is with footnotes too. I only use sideloaded books with calibre (sending them to my Glo HD as kepub). As I like the pop-up for the footnotes, my main problem (with fw3.15 and now with fw3.16) si that they let a shadow when I hit "close" after I read them. I mean, when I hit "close" it becomes a blac box and when effectively closing, the text that was under that box is very pale grey on white background (quite unreadible). The only way to get it right again is to turn a page and go back again. And what is most surprising is that it's not every time I pop a footnote. I just can't tell wich time it will appear and which time all will work well. (Too bad it's the second series of books I read that are just full of footnotes...)

I think exactly how bad it is depends on when the last full refresh was done. The more pages since it was done, the worse the leftovers. But, I have to admit I have read so few books with footnotes, I don't notice it. And, as an alternative to paging back and forth, tap the screen to bring up the menu and then tap it again to close the menu. That's basically a double-tap. A full refresh will be done when the menu is closed.

For me, the greatest problem is the highlights. The footnotes thing, once you go to kepubs, only has the refresh bug that - annoying as it may be - at least has a workaround.

As for the notes/highlights, when they stop working... They just stop working. Since the books I've been reading really require me to take notes (and follow footnotes), it has been a fairly bumpy first kobo experience.

On the other hand, my gf mostly reads novels, so she's over the moon with her Glo HD. So I'd say most people don't experience my level of frustration...

Tap on the page twice, then it refreshes, just tap in the middle, you see the menu options coming up, don't open anything.
Tap a second time, the options dissapear and the screen is refreshed.

After hacking the affiliate setting (was mediamarkt, changed to bestbuyca) I was able to upgrade to 3.16. The highlight problem remains.

I've come across an odd search problem in 3.16.0 (I do not know if it exists in previous versions). When I open a kepub downloaded from Kobo (Book A), return to the home screen, open another downloaded kepub (Book B), press on a word, and then select search in book, the search is carried out on Book A and not Book B. To get it to search in the proper book I first have to return to the home screen and then open the book again, so I suspect search uses the order of the tiles on the home screen and the tile order is not updated until you return to the home screen.

Yes, that's a bug. But, if you tap the book shown drops down a list of five books. The books listed are the five most recent books that are not finished. Your current book will probably be be the second second on the list. Tap your current book to select it and search will start again. After that, the correct book will be selected. Until you open a new book.

Kobo know about this and hopefully it will be fixed in the next firmware.

Thanks! :-)
I haven't had that particular problem again, but something else interesting just happened.

I sat outside reading (summer finally arrived here!), and after maybe 4-5 minutes I longpressed a word to look it up. But it didn't work as usual, it always went back a page (the word was on the left side of the page). After trying several times I gave up och finished reading the page. When I touched the screen to turnt a page forward, it went backward (1 page)!

No matter what I did, it always turned one page backward. Pressed everywhere on the screen, longpressed, swiped, etc. No menues, no nothing but going back 1 page.

Interesting...

I closed the (sleep-) cover, opened it, and it was back to normal. Read about 30 minutes more, all working as usual.

It is now 36 degrees.. I used the same book on the normal Glo and the Glo HD, the normal Glo responds now very slow, it looks like it can't refresh the screen totally, it is a bit grainy like the inkt partikels are much slower to fill, I set the total refresh now at 4 pages and then it is clean again, I noticed this also with my other glo that it is much slower in the sun. (Same with my Sony 650,it is really much more slow in the sun.)
However, both Glo HD's are responding much faster and does not have this problem at all.
Tapping quick on both screens to change pages resulting in the normal glo that it even don't display the pages anymore and just building the last page of the 20, while the HD displays the pages between to.
It looks like the normal glo's are in quicksand, while the HD's are walking on a beach in the shadow..

similar

I am annoyed by the behaviour of the "similar" tab in the book informations in 3.16.

My H2o is on 3.15. When I use the kobo utilities to set related books (by author for me) for a book by "various", I see two rows of 4 tiles for 3 pages, just one for the last page plus an invitation to discover other books of that type with a connect button.

On my glo HD, which is on 3.16, there is a line "the readers of this book have also liked..." and 4 tiles of books of mine by various plus a like "show all" which asks me to connect to internet, which I refuse.

Stuff and nonsense!

3.16 on H2O with Kepubs

For what it's worth, installed 3.16 over 3.15 on my H2O (no factory reset), using Mark 4. Patched also to fix footer spacing, font selection, etc. I only use sideloaded Kepubs from Calibre. Result? Significant improvement in responsiveness and page turn speed!! Very glad I updated.

Haven't seen (yet) any of the other problems reported, and I haven't (and don't intend) to try with epubs (I like the Kepub header).

Of course, YMMV.

Edit: Can confirm that the "search in book" bug elsewhere reported is present in 3.16 -- i.e., the search defaults to the prior book opened, although this is easily corrected because it's a drop-down tab and you can just select your current book (but it's an extra step that you need to remember).

Before I changed the file to change affiliation, my Glo got updates 3+ months behind everyone else.

It's a simple change to a file to be among the first getting the updates. In the .kobo directory, open the affiliate.conf file and change it to read:

[General]
affiliate=BestBuyCA

Or you could manually do the updates, all of the firmware links are in the Developer's Corner at the top. But you'll have to manually do them every firmware update. Changing the file is the easiest way.

Easiest and safest. I'll try that! Thanks! While I like tinkering, this is one of the things I expected to work.

I like that "search in book" is put where it should be: as an option in the same menu as annotations, dictionary, and reading settings
