I think it's just the way a lot of people talk now, including here in the US. If the story is good, I don't notice it unless the swearing is really excessive. If the plot and characters aren't holding my attention it is something I tend to notice more.

So I can see if you're reading samples and aren't reading a book by a known to you author and/or are not caught up in the story why it would jump out at you more.

It would be totally sad if that was true maybe it's south thing but I am not use to it. I am use to people saying no sir, yes ma'am and being polite to each other which is why Raleigh is hard to get use to but I haven't heard any potty mouths except drunk kids who live down the hall but given their social class it doesn't surprise me.

It depends on who they are and what they are doing. There are several situations and character types where a marked lack of swearing would be completely unrealistic.

And they would probably think that you're weird and something is wrong with you because of the way you talk - and hold your social class against you as a result.

That's just it the books I've started take place in normal setting no different than any other. the heroine isn't any different than say a Harlequin heroine. I don't read stories where say the heroine is drug addict or slut..etc. She suppose to be a good girl and yet talks like a sailor.

Sadly, this is becoming increasingly pervasive in many genres of literature as well as on the silver screen. Just like in real life.

Having spent some time around sailors, I very seriously doubt that

Froide is right. It's just a reflection of how real life is, just like more and more heroes and heroines have tattoos in books written today than they do in books written 15 years ago. Today, a tattoo is mainstream. Why wouldn't a "regular" person have one?

It is very sad. It's like the world is becoming uneducated more and more. Simpler vocabulary, More Profanity, and no creativity. Plots are being used over and over so much that Hollywood is doing remakes or grabbing books and turn them into movies because they are desperate for material.

I think I will just stay away from the newer stuff coming out and I am going to go finish my binge on Gilmore Girls.
