I would love to patronise your store, Kobo, but there is no way I am willing to pay that high a price for it. My H2O still doesn't have a single Kobo purchased book on it. It's all free or Amazon purchased books run through Calibre.
Have you found that the prices in the Kobo India store have gone up by about 200 or more rupees in the last few months?

Do you think that India should be included in the countries that are able to play the monthly Kobo Contest (currently only open to the UK CA and US)?

I'm always open to contests

I'm not in position to attest to recent price increases at Kobo. I only started tracking Kobo store prices in earnest since I got my H2O a couple of months back. Previously I'd only purchased books from Amazon for my Kindle Keyboard after a cursory cross-comparison of book prices showed it to be the cheapest option.

I've tried applying various coupon codes at the Kobo bookstore, but none of them stick. I reckon it would take a 75% off coupon for Kobo to achieve price parity with Amazon in most cases here.

I don't understand why Kobo can't match Amazon book prices. There are sites like Flipkart here that do sell ePubs at prices comparable to Amazon's, but unfortunately those can only be read on their own tablet/PC apps, and I don't think there's a way to extract those ePubs from within the apps, which makes them a non-option.

Another example: "The New Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day"

Amazon.de: 9.79 €
Kobo Germany: 21.77 €

You would need a 55% discount to get even - that is if you could get a discount code that would be valid in Germany...

Got an email from Kobo recommending several books one of which was Hyperspace by physicist Michio Kaku for a mere $53. You can get it on iBooks for $14.99 and a pBook version from Amazon for $9. What is Kobo thinking? Are they in Hyperspace?

When my Sony dies, I was thinking I'd get a Kobo but now maybe I'll do a Kindle or iPad mini.

Have a look at the price history of this book on luzme: https://luzme.com/author/Michio+Kaku...enth+Dimension

First thing to note is that there are two editions of this book, a UK and a US edition. For some reason there has been a massive price increase for the US edition, and there are two prices at Apple.

For some reason Apple has both editions, the UK edition for $14.99 and the US edition for $59.99. Other US retailers only have the US editions. Note that the book is discountable at Kobo, so you can use a promo code, there are 35% codes available right now or you can wait for a competition and get a 45% or 55% code with a bit of patience.

So the prices for the US edition from US retailers are:
Apple: $59.99
Kobo: $53.99
Google: $47.39
B&N: $41.99
Amazon: $38.99
Kobo: $35.10 (with 35% promo code.)

I am glad to know that I am not the only one angered by the price difference between Kobo and Amazon!

While, I don't expect the prices to be identical, I would expect them to be similar overall.

Yet, what my friends (who I have given Kobos to), have complained about, is that Kobo has increase prices for it's books signifcantly over the last year - to the point where they have stopped buying any Kobo books or using their Kobo's.

To take one set of examples . . .

Whoever decided to set Kobo Books Canadian Prices for
a) Paul Doherty's "Book Of Fires" at CAD$22.19 vs Amazon.ca at $15.21
or
b) Most of Bernard Knight's "Crowner John" Series at CAD $22.19 (vs Amazon.ca at CAD
- whereas Amazon.ca are pricing these books at CAD $8.99-$16.99

. . . is either an idiot, an agent working for Amazon . . . . or reflecting a level of sheer greed that maybe they should pursue a career in banking!!!

Why is "The Awful Secret" by Bernard Knight being sold by Amazon.ca for "only" CAD$8.66 for the Kindle?? yet is being sold by Kobo books at almost 3 times the price for the Kobo - at CAD $22.31!!!

Has the cost of expense account lunches gone up THAT much in "the centre of the Universe" ??- sorry, I meant Toronto - for our non Canadian forum readers..

Unfortunately, I have recently seen that in virtually every case for my favourite medieval mystery writers, the prices of their books have been dramatically increased from (around $11.99 a year or so ago, to $15 -$25) this year!!!

- and NO the change in the Foreign Exchange Rate for the US Dollar would NOT suffice as an excuse!

I am pretty sure the AUTHORS aren't getting the increase or benefits of the higher prices from Kobo, so what is the justification of these rip-of prices from Kobo?

What is happening is that I will start avoiding recommending Kobo to any of my friends, since these price levels will only result in irritation or resentment - and the feeling that they have been given a white elephant.

Last year I gave a number of my friends Kobo e-readers as presents, and while they were happy to buy e-books when they were priced less at $9.99 or less, the moment the prices started approaching or even surpassing the cost of the paperback equivalent, they stopped using or buying e-books!

It would seem that Kobo have picked up that level of greed and contempt for their readers that a number of older publishing companies became infamous for years ago.

If there are employees of Kobo Canada reading this, then I'd love to hear WHY the Kobo Canada prices are so high!

One thing is for sure, I will NOT be buying electronic copies of works of fiction at these price levels - from Kobo!

Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

I have read somewhere that Amazon is making "unfair deals" with publishers and authors in order to bring the prices really low. These make Amazon always a target of conflicts, lawsuits and other misunderstandings. Check some of the issues below:

@Ryuji35. This is old news. All but the last of your links relate to the Hachette dispute and the associated and infamous Authors United intervention. They have been done to death here, but IMHO Amazon emerges unscathed. Your last link on delivery charges by Amazon is interesting. I haven't previously come across it. My initial reaction is that the charge is over the top, but then again it is a graphics intensive travel book, and I presume the charge relate to delivery over Whispernet (3G). I don't think it is of any more than at best marginal relevance to this thread, but it raises an interesting issue I would like to know more about.

And you could have not given Apple any money for an eBook and bought it from Google Play for the same $12.99 and gotten a real ePub that you could strip the DRM and read on any of your ePub capable Readers.
