Don't ever read Moby Dick, in the days the book was written authors were paid based on the number of pages they wrote so there was an incentive to ramble and he book really rambles a lot.

I just realised I missed my first day on my daily short story challenge yesterday. I'm quite annoyed at myself about that. I had plenty of free time, but just clean forgot.

I'm still on target - I was allowing for a few slip-ups and unusually busy days - but it's still annoying to break the chain after 30 days.

I finally took a break from the manga! I'm currently reading The Rook by Daniel O'Malley. It is quite interesting and humorous!

It's a great story buried in a book on whaling terminology.

Not my favourite read.

We're now well past January and into February. I'm doing well on my main challenge of keeping to a book buying budget. I think I'm a little behind on my reading of the books I bought in 2004 and 2005 but haven't yet read, but I'm sure I can catch up.

A most enjoyable start to my reading year.

I finished my second Canadian book and have started my third Canadian book. Looking good to make a serious dent in that subchallenge this month.

I am on track, despite my ENGL 44B class. Ooh, my first essay is up this weekend. Let's see how painful it will be-- every instructor is different, you know, and this one is a PhD, which might mean I spend the whole weekend trying to craft a B essay when I am not actually working.

I have no idea about a thesis yet. :/

Now that January is over ...

I completed 14 books in January, 3 short of the average of 17 which I need to read each month to meet my goal of 200 books. But I know that the number of books I read each month varies by quite a lot. In 2014, they varied from 7 to 17. The characteristics of the books I'm reading contribute and there's always work and life which can affect the amount of time available for reading.

My secondary goal is to read at least 50,000 pages. That's a monthly objective of 4166 pages, and I exceeded that in January with 4391 pages.

Regarding the other challenges I have decided to attempt, I have made no progress toward completing any of the designated series. I'm working on the Brother Cadfael series and about 60% of the way through The Leper of Saint Giles.

I've completed 15 books so far this year, and managed to record all of them. But I'm really struggling to keep the total spent, including Audible Credits, up to date and accurate. It's just way too easy to lose track. A real struggle. I think I've got it accurate, but I might well have missed one or two. But at least nothing major.

So far I've spent $45, and used 7 Audible credits. Which, considering my usual spending on books, makes it a good month. That number of Audible credits is high, obviously, but I used up several extra credits that I'd carried over from last year, plus three credits I got as freebies for joining KU. I'll be killing that account shortly.

I'm still reading my 7th book of the year. Its taking me way too long to complete, but that technically can't be helped. At least I'm enjoying the ride, even if I feel like I'm stuck in traffic.

The more frustrating situation, however, is my internal struggle over which of 3 options I should read next.

Continuing the Kitchen Princess series, rereading Volume 1 and then finishing the Omnibus Versions of the Chobits series , or Age of Innocence.

I feel like I'm forgetting a 4th one, but I'm not sure what it is at the moment.
