Is new PW imminent?

In my opinion, if the basic kindle is out of stock means that they will announce the new model soon.
I don't think that Amazon has decided to exit the low-end devices.
The paperwhite maybe it's still available because there is more inventory in stock, even if it is odd since last week appeared as "shipping in 1-2 weeks."

I bought a Kindle 3G a couple of days ago from Amazon UK and to my surprise found it had 3.5G of memory. I currently have 980 books loaded with 2,386 MB free. No other difference from my other 6-month old PW2 WiFi.

PW2's have been shipping with 4GB of storage for a couple of months now. There are several threads on the subject on this forum.

Kindle returns are 100% within 30 days, 80% within 60 days, after that you are out of luck. Warranty is for one year, if it breaks after that they won't attempt a repair but will offer you a refurbished unit at a not very good price- when my PW1 3g no ads froze after a year and a half they offered an equivalent replacement for $163.

It seems almost certain now that no new PW will be released this year. I wonder what this means? There appears to be no major hardware innovation available and Amazon aren't interested in forcing it. I do wonder if they're holding back and plan to release something ground-breaking at a later date like color. Alternatively, Amazon are just not that interested in innovating atm. They control the market. Most users are satisfied with the product. They are king of the hill. No reason to do anything and the market is tied up. There is no profit or need to innovate or even diversify into different sizes.

Thanks for the info, so i guess if there is a new kindle coming out, ill be lucky if it will be before my 30days period pass!

In the previous two years, PW1 was released on October 1st, and PW2 on September 30th.

"A week or so" probably won't cut it.

Unfortunately, I think DSpider is correct--even if Amazon were to announce a new Kindle today, they probably wouldn't be taking orders for a week or two, and at that point they'd probably be taking pre-orders for devices to be shipped a couple of weeks to a month later.

I'd rather no one else was seriously ill, but I will probably order one straight away just in case I need to come back or someone visits me and can bring it over with them. Worst case I'll have it in my hands next spring. Until then at least my iPad can still hold all my books!

I think it would be strange for Amazon not to release a new device. My hope, since it specifically is the KB4 that is out of stock, is that they release a updated basic reader with at least 212 PPI and at the same price. I do like my PW2 a lot but I probably would switch back. I love how light and thin the K4B is and how the text appears to be sitting right next to the surface rather than buried beneath glass.

Amazon knows that the real money comes from the kindle books. A cheap, innovative, device lines up with most of their recent releases in the past couple years.

My hope? Based on the rumors at goodereader, supposedly from a Amazon insider, of amazon using a flexible display that will be up to 50% lighter than current ereaders, I'm hoping that we get an incredibly light basic kindle with 212ppi, with improved contrast from the last model at $69. I would imagine it would be hard to implement the lighted screen in a flexible display so I don't think the PW would be upgraded to that. I would buy in a heartbeat.
