But if you instal Classic Start Menu, you get both a proper desktop and Metro. So you can have what suits you for the task at hand.

In my case, the desktop works better because when I'm running say Calibre or Sigil or Notepad++, I'm at the desktop because I'm using a desktop app. Switching to Metro from there just to find an icon to click to run something else is actually rather inefficient.

Graphics card maybe - but MS v Libre Office, AVG v Avast, MS v Comodo firewall, that's stretching some pretty long bows, why not Photoshop versus The Gimp or what side of the Pond you're on

I'm also curious about why any discussion of this issue is taken by some as a personal attack on Kovid, of course he has right to withdraw support for XP, or anything else. But when it comes as a surprise, even I suspect to Kovid himself, its bound to engender discussion that ought not be stifled by name calling and churlishly dismissing peoples contributions thereto.

This shall be my last contribution on the matter, your Grace!

I am the same, the vast majority of the applications I use are desktop ones and I find Windows 8 is a progression forwards.

If you have made a genuine investigation and trial use of the Windows 8 Start menu as it is delivered and find that does not suit you, but that the add in sorts it for you, then all credit to you as far as I am concerned. However, I, and many others, have found differently, and I know many users never make the effort of trying before pronouncing their dismissals.

As I said I don't much care what people decide to use in the way of Windows versions (or other operating systems), that including whatever add in modifications they wish to apply to them. But my opinion is that ones own choice in that should not be stuffed down everyone's throat as if it was necessary for good order as is happening with many mentions here of Win 8. The choice is personal only, it is not based on fixing a deficiency.

The pity is that XP the problems were not discovered until it was released. I wonder if Kovid might have been able to make a different decision had we, the user community, done a more thorough job of testing prior to its release and alerted him to the problems whilst V2 was still in beta.

I for one only really tested the converted PI's. I did not test the beta of the core product against my main libraries much, my excuse is one of the PIs I rely on daily was one of the last to be converted - but its not a very good excuse

I used the 20x betas on XP for the whole period (and on W7 for the last 3).
XP is my intake machine, where I massage the books to render my way on my PEz (has mrsdk).
The only big problem was the task manger blank fields (corrupted in settings file).

Add, Metadata, convert, edit, plugins were hit frequently.
Granted, EPUB was my target format.

during tht time Notpadd++ update came thru. Find in Files no longer 'finds'

Did anyone actually ask a question that pertains to this endless to and fro on how many angels can dance on a Windas Start button/orb and what ought pop up when they do, or whether Linus' blanket is better than Lucie's

Trying to convince one another that one's way of using this or that operating system is an absolute waste of bandwidth, disk space and mental energy.

And as far as I can see the discussion has Sweet Fanny Adams to do with the calibre ebook manager. Maybe someone could move the discussion to the hidden forum on Religion & Politics (I think that's what its called - never seen it myself) - because that's what it has descended into, and its not even funny.

Is it just on XP, my Notepad++ is OK on 7 - its 6.6.8. Find files was how I found out where that DOC Input PI was stashing the path to wordconv. I think there might have been two recent close together releases, maybe one was a fixup.

Is calibre 2.1 stopped from running in win xp or just the installer if its just the installer. People on xp can install the portable version in win 7 and copy it over to Xp. You wont get any support from Kovid but can at least use the latest version.

For those of you on Xp who cannot afford to upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8, Calibre 1.48 runs fine. ALL the plugins that worked on 1.48 still work unlike 2.x where some no longer work. So be happy you have a good version of Calibre to run and START SAVING TO GET WINDOWS 7 OR WINDOWS 8 (but run the upgrade advisor for Windows 8 as the processor requirements are strict).

If you put away $20 a month, in 5-6 months, you should have enough saved to buy Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Nope. There's code in Calibre that stops it from running on XP. So even if you install Under Windows 7 and copy it over, it won't work. Like I said in another thread. Save $20 a month and in 5-6 months, you'll have enough money to be able afford an OS upgrade.

Never thought to try on W7. It work there (and it works for some words and not others on XP ) for cases that faile on XP <- I copied the same folder to W7 for the test

BTW It RUNS, it just never finds any files (even Window search finds them) so I just lose the nice integration.

Remember there are instructions for running calibre from source allowing you to disable the XP block. Only if you wish to risk crashes, of course.

"...and it works for some words" - weird.

Does NP++ have an super hidden exclusion dictionary something like MS Word's, although why such a thing should stop it finding some words would be weird²

BR

Word has a feature where one can exclude words from a dictionary which one regards as being misspelt - eg the Aussie dictionary has 'mispelled'. But you have to get under Words covers, its documented though ==>> Change the preferred spelling for words with exclusion dictionaries.

Since Both are vanilla installs, I would expect both to behave similar.
