Thought I'd share this chat log:
Quote:
Initial Question: Hello, can I renew my Prime membership *today*?

04:24 PM(GMT) Sridhar(CSA): Hello Kralik, I am Sridhar and I will be helping you today
04:25 PM(GMT) Sridhar(CSA): your prime membership is valid till March 8, 2014 Kralik
04:25 PM(GMT) Kralik: Yes; however, I read that the Amazon Prime cost is soon due to increase. So I would like to renew a month early
04:26 PM(GMT) Sridhar(CSA): do you want to extend it for one more month Kralik?
04:26 PM(GMT) Kralik: I would like to renew today for $79
04:27 PM(GMT) Sridhar(CSA): the prime membership is going to remain the same for existing members Kralik, on March 8, 2014 you will be charged $79 nothing more
04:27 PM(GMT) Kralik: Does that mean that the rumors of a price increase are false?
04:28 PM(GMT) Sridhar(CSA): yes we do have lot of inquires coming regarding that, please do not worry there will not be any price increase
04:28 PM(GMT) Kralik: Alright, that is good enough for me. Thanks for the help!
04:29 PM(GMT) Sridhar(CSA): You’re welcome. Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
04:29 PM(GMT) Kralik: That will be all, thanks.
04:29 PM(GMT) Sridhar(CSA): You're welcome. Thank you for contacting Amazon. We hope to see you again. Have a great day.
The existing members line is interesting... Hmmm...

I've used Amazon Prime for many years, quite a few of those on Free memberships. I also share my account with my parents. They live at a different address and get full Prime shipping benefits. I'm not sure if that's still possible or they were grandfathered in.

For the number of things I can buy cheap from Amazon after reading reviews, and the fact that it has replaced Netflix ($84/year) for my kids, I find it to be a very good value. I live in a rural area and the only shopping option within 30-45 minutes driving distance is Walmart. When comparing Amazon vs. Walmart prices, Amazon wins, even for necessities like toilet paper. When I consider the convenience factor, time and gas savings, it's a no-brainer.

The more I stand waiting in line at a local store for the privilege of paying higher prices, often after being greeted by an empty shelf where one of the products I came to purchase had been, the more stuff I buy from Amazon. I'd tolerate a price increase of Prime, should it occur.

Thanks xg4bx! I didn't know that. I'll look into it.

Alas, I am a man of limited means, but I have Prime. Last year I used the camels (camelcamelcamel.com) for nearly every Amazon purchase. The camels not only emails me when an item's frequently-fluctuating price dips below my target; the camels also offers a chart showing the price history of each item for the past two years (so I know when the current price is historically high).

All this is relevant to this discussion because in the past year I have saved a large amount of money by buying single items when they are on sale. If I had to wait for $35 worth of items to be on sale simultaneously, I would have missed out on most of the sales. If I had paid for shipping, that would have eaten up much of the discount.

So for at least a year I would pay the price increase of a Prime membership.

Here's how I read that CSR chat: The price will go up, existing Prime members will be able to renew for another year at the current rate. Not too bad!

I just hope my brother-in-law can afford the increase, when it does finally happen.

Newegg is launching it's own version of Prime. Premier. $50 per year for 3 day shipping. May put pressure against a Prime price hike.

Newegg also has a will-call center with free same-day pickup 5 minutes from my house.

Lucky you!! OTOH I'm glad that there isn't a free pick-up nearby as I would spend even more than I do at Newegg. LOL

I just got the email from Amazon that my Prime membership will go from $79 (US) to $99 on my next renewal date (June). I can live with that.

The notices went out this morning:
Prime goes to $99, $49 for students.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-576...to-$99-a-year/

The talk of possibly going to $129 was probably meant to induce relief at the news that it "only" went up by $20.

In the UK the price of Prime has gone up to £79. That's about $125.

I'm not sure whether I'll renew when it comes up. The addition of streaming video is nice, but is it enough?

Although I'm certainly not happy with any increase, $99 is still a good deal for my purposes. I get a LOT of stuff from Amazon and it saves me quite a bit on shipping costs. Hopefully the $99 keeps the free two-day shipping and $3.99 one-day shipping fees at those rates. If they raise those as well, then I will have to reconsider. I've had Prime for several years now, so I'm not surprised they had to finally raise the price.

I've had Prime for only a couple of months, and I'll probably renew since the price has stayed under $100.
