Ah, now I understand, I thought you were saying you can't use emoticons in your posts because you need to print them.

...except I don't understand why you can't use emoticons.

Now I at least understand that you need to print the PDF in question.

I'm surprised, usually even the locked ones allow printing. You must have gotten hold of one from somebody really paranoid.

This is, I assume, the source of the PDF's you're trying to print?

It looks like they've locked them down pretty thoroughly (nothing I know to try works, anyway), but that's in keeping with their site usage policy, so I guess it's unsurprising.

The author of a PDF determines the intended usage of that PDF. If they've locked it from printing, that is because they do not wish it to be printed. If you have a valid reason why you need to print these, the proper course of action is to explain your reasons to the PDF author and ask for a printable version.

Or, you may decide to try to break the security settings. That is a personal choice, similar to removing DRM from an e-book. I will not comment on the right or wrong of it, but no one here is going to assist you in this.

All such settings are embedded in the PDF itself, and are enforced by the application used to interpret and display the PDF. Most commercial PDF applications are good PDF "citizens" and respect and enforce these settings. The PDF specification is public. It is possible to write your own PDF "reader" application, as I've had to do in my line of work, in which case you can be as strict or as lax as you choose in handling PDF features.

That should be enough information for you to decide on a course of action for your PDF files.

I downloaded http://www.horrormasters.com/Text/a0976.pdf and opened it in the standard Linux program xpdf (maybe available for Windows) and printed to file and got a poscscript file. I assume that the postscript file is printable.

The standard method is to convert to postscript.

Format shifting is allowed in most countries. It is silly not to tell people how to do it. It is like not telling people that they can use a scanner and ocr programs to format shit a paper book.

If the document had no restrictions on it, there would be no issue with shifting the format of these eBooks into another format. However that is not the case. The issue is that these are restricted and protected eBooks.

In this case, the question is not about format shifting. It is about circumventing a document's protection. In that regard, providing instruction on how to do this violates forum policy.

tompe, I was referring specifically to technical aspects of the PDF format. A PDF can be restricted, those restrictions are formalized within the spec, and PDF processing software is supposed to enforce those restrictions, but not all does.

The right/wrong, ethical, moral, and legal issues I emphatically do not address.

One of the problems as I see it is Overdrive. Overdrive is where libraries get their eBooks for lending. They get them in PDF and Mobipocket formats. But the issue is that Overdrive has a lot of eBooks in PDF only. Also, because they sell the eBooks separately, the libraries have to buy PDF and Mobipocket as two separate eBooks. So it turns out the the PDF is usually purchased if they library only goes for one format. Now not all the eBooks that overdrive have should not be in PDF. Some are text books and other such books that work better in PDF. But for all the regular books, nothing wrong with Mobipocket. In fact, it works a lot better for more people who read on the go then PDF ever will. So let's all blame Overdrive for helping keep PDF as an eBook format for eBooks that don't need to be in PDF.

No I Think PDF format not a type of ebook .. The ebook is converted in PDF format so that users can easily understand the content.

The problem is that PDF is not an easily understood or read format for anyone with a portable device. The small screens on portable devices make reflowable documents a must, and PDF does not reflow well if at all.

I do not think this is covered by the policy. But I might misremember.

Since it obviously is allowed to say one word and google for removing drm I assume i can say xpdf for printing and pdftotext for format shifting to a text file.

especially since xpdf (w/o modifying the source) respects DRM --- the program author has a very sensible view of the situation IMO.

http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/cracking.html

Short version: take it up w/ the author / the person who provided / made the .pdf.
