They say that in the announcement but it actually isn't accurate. I am working on my pc app at work correcting some books for my collections and they downloaded the collections from the cloud during a sync. I am not sure it it is downloading the pw or k4pc ones but they downloaded and MESSED up my order even though they were all there before the sync. It is as if they delete them then re-download them.

Every time you go to delete a collection, a message pops up. First, about it being synced, second about not being connected (if wifi is off)

Every time you want to create a collection, a message pops up. "turn on wifi?" "collection not synced"

Every time you want to add an item to a collection, a message pops up. "Content Not Synced." - and I will get this EVERY time because I side load ALL of my books.

This is about as fun as cleaning up a row of porto potties after a weekend bluegrass festival.
I sideload all my books as well, I had to stop messing with the collections in order to clean up the asin's in Calibre so the Amazon ones are recognized as Amazon books. Once I get this all straight then I am going to tackle all my non-Amazon books which I keep on my pw. Do you think this annoying habit is to discourage us from sideloading non-Amazon books?

Okay. Then apparently the Mac app is operating differently as it doesn't auto import and it only allows you to import from applicable devices. I prefer that to the auto forced import of the entire cloud collections.

sirmaru, you should really start appreciating what others say more. You are simply wrong on this one, again.

It is trivial to test, create a collection on PW2 5.4.2, choose a book that is not on device... And the collection AND the book in the cloud will show (greyed a little) even in the Device mode. Which is crazy, really.

I'm not digging seeing my entire collection on the device. all I want really are the following

1) ability to put a permanent order for how I want books viewed so I can for instance put pages always first followed by location if pages is not available etc

2) ability to set wireless on default timer setting so I can say have wireless only by default go on for an hour (because I forget to turn it off after browsing kindle store because they have buried airplane mode in settings).

3) fix "go to" toc so I can actually read the titles of the chapters as opposed to
stuff like...

chapter 5 getting ready to upgrad....
chapter 6 configuring the networki....

4) have collections show small (like in list view) even in cover view. Having giant "covers" for what are just folders offering no visual on the books inside makes no sense and to me

that drives me nuts.

All eBooks in the Cloud are shown in the Cloud. The Device only shows eBooks downloaded to the Device. The Cloud shows eBooks inside the Collections as well as showing them a second time outside the Collections.

If you have eBooks on the Device you do not want, just delete them.

On the HDX 2013 you can see Collections if you go to that Menu function in the Book area. They do not show on the Home Page unless you copy them there.

The whole idea is to give the user a place to manage the Collections on either of those 2 devices. Making changes on one syncs to the other.

I don't see what the problem is for all the complainers here other than huge misunderstandings from reading posts here and never really trying to access this feature on their own mostly because many, if not most of the posters here, do not own a PW 2013 or an HDX 2013.

By the way, Collections can be in any order you want by just preceding the Collection name by a NUMBER.

Finally, those, who own a Kindle Fire HDX 2013, can call Mayday right on that unit and get advice based on the best information available for both units. Response is IMMEDIATE and all the advisors appear to be AMERICAN.
I am not sure what you are looking at on your pw2 but on my pw2 in both the cloud and the device I see all the collections and all the books. In the cloud the books on the device show up with a check enclosed in a circle, on the device all the books in the cloud show up as greyed out. And as the complainers state, this is redundant and encumbersome. The books that are in the cloud should remain there and they should not be showing up in the device view, as they were with previous kindles and updates.

The user should also not be forced to have wifi on to make collections additions/changes. At the very least it should be syncing after all the changes to the collection are made, not to the changes of each individual book.

Simaru as a user who has very few collections, you should not assume that the process is workable as it is. For those of us who have large libraries with a large group of collections, this is not user manageable.

Same here, this is seriously pissing me off. I cannot work on my pw because I have to fix books and I am having trouble fixing books because it keeps autoupdating. I am about to set my antivirus software to block it so that it will not make any more changes.

I have turned on wifi on my PW2 but it hasn't found ANY update. Its currently shows v5.4 and "Update your Kindle" is greyed out. Hitting "sync and check for items" results in "no new items found".
I'm in the UK and my device is registered to my UK account.
Anyone else in the same situation? Any ideas why Amazon are giving me the cold shoulder?

Here are a couple of screen captures showing how 5.4.2 displays Cloud only items greyed out in collections, whether you want to see them or not:

Isn't the menu choice for manual updates? Download the .bin from Amazon.com, move via USB to device root and then click that menu entry. Wi-fi updates usually come later and update silently.

5.4.2 fixes issue with connecting PW2 to Mac via USB cable

I just noticed that the FW 5.4.2 update has apparently fixed the issue with connecting PW2 to Mac via USB cable. This was not working before, well, not working like it should have.

I assume they don't send the update to all the Kindles at the same time! Might take a few days for yours to get it. I always go with downloading from the Amazon page and then loading the .bin to Kindle when *I* decide I want to update (and in the case of 5.4.2, I most certainly won't )

Here is the draft of what I plan to send in as feedback:

Hello:

I am concerned with the usability of my paperwhite 2013 after the

update to 5.4.2. This update to collections have made my

paperwhite very cumbersome to use.

1. Forcing the user to leave the wifi on while creating and/or

updating collections puts a strain on the device and the user.

Especially for users who are either not in an area with wifi

service or if the user has to pay for data usage. If this

requirement must be on the device, can it please at least be

changed to when the user is saving the collection, rather than on

each individual book. Though it would be preferrable if this

option is either turned off by default or give the user the

option to turn it off/on at their discretion.

2. Displaying books that are in the cloud in the collections

while in the device view is hard for users, especially those of

us who have large libraries and large collections. If the user

is in the device view, only those books that are on the device

should be shown.

3. In previous versions of the collections feature a user used

to be able to search specific terms and use that search result to

be able to add/remove books from collections. This feature has

been removed from the options, it would be most helpful if that

feature could be added back.

4. Forcing every device registered to an account to see and

control all collections is not very feasible for accounts with

multiple users, or users with multiple devices. Or accounts with

children, parents should not be forced to setup freetime in order

to block their children from seeing and/or changing collections.

Not many users want to see all their collections on all their

devices. For example, my Fire HD is not my main device and I

only keep a small select amount of books on it. I do not want

nor need to scroll through 100 collections just to find my 5-10

books. Please rethink this and add an option for users to either

choose which collections reside on particular devices, or add

this feature to the cloud and let all books/collections be

maintained there, not on the individual devices.

5. Most importantly, can an option be added that allows more

sort options?

Please, I would like to go back to using my paperwhite to read,

not spend my time scrolling through pages and pages of

collections and books to find something to read.

I have created an 'expurgated' version of jswinden's fine letter and sent it directly to Mr. Bezos. (Removed a few WTF's - though I echo your sentiment!)
Quote:
Mr. Bezos:

I only use this email address for serious issues, and I think that this rates your personal attention.

Concerning the 5.4.2 firmware update for the Paperwhite 2013:

Do you realize how utterly useless you have now made Collections on the Paperwhite 2013? Here are the problems.

(1) You force all the Cloud Collections onto the Paperwhite 2013 when the 5.4.2 update is installed. What if we don’t want every ancient collection we ever used on devices we no longer even own to be forced onto our Paperwhite 2013? Did you even consider that? You need to give us the option to select which Cloud Collections we place on our Paperwhite 2013. Some people have multiple Kindles and would like to have different collections on them, not every collection they ever created on every Kindle.

(2) You force all of the Cloud Collections onto our Paperwhite 2013 then you also force the display of every book/doc stored in the Cloud into those collections. Some people have thousands of books/docs in the Cloud but only want a few listed on their Paperwhite 2013. But now you force us to page through dozens of pages to find anything we look for. Give us the ability to turn off the displaying of all those Cloud book/docs so we can see what we have on our Paperwhite 2013!

(3) You now make any edits done to Collections on the Paperwhite 2013 automatically apply to the Cloud Collections. What if we want to have some collections on one device and different collections on another device? If we delete or rename a collection on the Paperwhite 2013, it is modified in the Cloud Collections and forced onto all of our applicable devices. Give us a Web Page where we can edit Cloud Collections rather than doing it directly from a device.

To reiterate, we need the following improvements to Cloud Collections. Do NOT force all of the Cloud Collections onto our devices. Give us the option to select the ones we want. Give us the ability to turn off the display of Cloud items that are listed within our collections on our devices. Give us a Web Page from which we can modify Cloud Collections rather than the confusing modification currently done on our devices.

Thank you for your immediate attention. This is quite possibly the worst 'improvement' ever inflicted on the Kindle.
Thank you Jack ... and anyone else - feel free to use or modify this version - let Amazon know how we feel.

Thanks that's done it. I had a chat with Amazon and was told that Wi-Fi must be switched on when they release the update, otherwise you need to update via PC. Hmmm...
Anyway, I'm updated now
