Just got a kindle paperwhite in store at Best Buy - Page 10

Hmm I wonder if I should contact Amazon then. The Best Buy I bought it from had another ... but that was this morning so there is no guarantee they would have another. Plus it's a 20+ minute drive ... hmmm.

If you get a replacement through Amazon, you don't have to return Kindle #1 first. You can compare both side by side.

If you exchange through Best Buy, there's no comparison. Kindle #2 could be worse than Kindle #1. (speaking from personal experience).

I did not know that, thank you for that point.

I think at this point I will wait until my husband is home and see what he thinks. I don't think it honestly bothers me, but at the same time I don't want a defective device.

I see the same. MrsAmandaK - I suppose it really just depends on how much you see it, and if it bothers you. Good luck with whatever you decide.

What did you think of the other pictures as well?

Lol it really just looks like its a matter of preference and tolerance levels for such things.

I think you nailed it. Some screens I have seen would not have been OK for me, but yours looks fine to me. If you like it, and remember you still have 30 days to decide that, keep it. If not, change it or return it. I would personally advise you to follow your feelings and not necessarily what has been written here because right now, I don't think the PW threads are at their best in terms of objectivity. Keep in mind we have different perception in terms if sight (as is normal for all senses) so really, try it out and decide for yourself.

I am all for returning merchandise that is inadequate. However, if you do not perceive a flaw, don't let the internet convince you that something is wrong. Try reading on it for a while and then make a judgment based on experience.

I have seen pics of some really bad PW screens. Yours is certainly not in that class. It is much more difficult to judge the screen quality of good units on the basis of a photo, as there can be artifacts from the camera, and from the computer screen.

I think a lot of the photos on the internet are probably making things look worse than they are.

I think it is probably "normal" that all PWs do not show perfectly pure white at low LED settings in low light. There is some variance probably caused by variation in the LEDs + the diffraction grating "light guide".

But when you take a picture of the PW with a "consumer" digital camera or particularly a smartphone it boosts saturation on the image almost without fail (unless the camera is sufficiently advance to have a "RAW" mode or advanced color controls.) As soon as that picture gets the saturation boosted it's going to make the screen look more green or pinkish then it probably looks in real life.

My PW (which I consider to be a "good" one) definitely shows coloration in low light.. but it's very subtle and doesn't bother me. Sometimes if I look for it I can see it, and other times it's not, and I think reflections of other light on the screen can make it appear better or worse.

I'm sure if I take a picture with my DSLR and put it "landscape" mode and tell it to "cook" a JPEG file for me the screen will look green & pink. But if I stick it in a "neutral" setting it will probably make the screen look more uniform.

I think what may be going on is the screen has some kind of property like some kinds of paper & ink, that it has "metamerism" and light rays hitting it at different angles and such can cause color shifting.

You probably have to decide what you want.. this off white coloration as a result of amazon shooting as hard as they can for "white", or just get something like the Nook Glow and accept that it's going to look really blue almost all the time. I have one of those too, it is very very blue compared to the PW. I'd prefer the PW to be perfectly pure white/gray at any LED setting in any light level but regardless it is still way better than the Nook even in settings where I can see color shifting.

Yes is seems worse then yesterday. I might send it back for a refund and keep using my Kindle 4 until Amazon produces a screen that's not defective. An employee walked in my office today his wife works at a optometrists office and he just got his eyes examined and new glasses he noticed right off coloration and poor contrast and he is not even a Kindle user.

I see it in all of them too. Whenever someone posts a pic claiming theirs is perfect, I still see it. So I agree, a lot of it is down to the user. Just because someone says they got a good one that has no defects, doesn't mean we wouldn't see it differently.
