I thought it was more about strangling the competition irrespective of the charges. Plus, getting a patent doesn't always mean you actually invented it. Of course I am no expert and this is my personal opinion.

At least you got that right. It's about money and strangling competition via the courts using doubtful or simply invalid patents. Don't tell me that there were no smartphones pre-iphone with full glass front, or rounded corners, or grids of icons.
