I think the contrast really depends on how much light you are getting.

When under a fairly well lit lamp, I'd say its comparable to a paper book. That is the K3/Keyboard I'm talking about.

But anyway, won't be upgrading mine until it breaks down. Does everything I want it to and I have no other feature requests. Only thing I want is a slightly lighter device.

Many users want a more stable device (e-ink screens break easily), those two might be hard to put in one device.

The kindle is actually quite sturdy. I've dropped it many times with no ill effect. *knock wood* (it landed on its side or back each time)

However, the screen has a glass substrate that cracks easily, so any pressure on the screen is deadly.

If they can use an all plastic screen, the unit can be made lighter without compromising sturdiness.

I would also be aware of any torsion that gets applied to the kindle - not just pressing the screen, but also bending the device as such.

And that is where I think the old Kindle (1st and 2nd generation) might actually be sturdier with their thick plastic frames than the thinner and more elegant third version. But I only speak from the experience of having broken one 3rd gen kindle by putting it into a bag with too flimsy a cover 2 weeks after buying it, not from having actually used a 1st or 2nd gen device.

Best regards,
Andy

Before I bought my Kindle approximatly one year ago I had an aluratek libra pro and before that an aluratek libra pro and before that a Pandigitial Novel. Why two libra pros, well I will tell you. It seems that the libra pro is a lot more flimsy then the Kindle ever was, I was walking back to the office from the gym with the first of the libra pros in my coat pocket and the screen got a big old crack in it from something hitting the screen. I do understand that with enough pressue any reader's screen will crack, however my kindle has stood up to the same pounding that the libra pro did and took it all in stride. The other libra pro broke down when I put it on a desk for a two week period, then it would not do anything, then I got the kindle. Before the libra pros was a pandigital novel which was simply terrible qaulity and got stolen before I had it for approximatly one month. My kindle has out lasted anything that I have experienced.

Will be glad when flexible displays are released. Whether the device itself is flexible or not is irrelevant. The key point is to have a display that will withstand minor flexing (in a pocket or bag) and short drops (from a school desk or out of your hand).

BTW, I kind of upgraded. I got a K4 from Walmart for $49 and put it in a black Marware SportGrip cover. My K3 is still my primary reading device. The K4 is a backup and for trips outside the house.

You got a K4! I use mine the most but I have Eco-Flip case where I just put my hand in the strap and not have to hold anything.

My K3 is my bedroom reader when I have the lights on. I recently had to a factory reset (first time) and I forgot to apply the font hack. I've forgotten how much I really dislike Caecilia. This alone will probably keep me from wanting a newer Kindle.
I do have my Kindle Fire though I find it a pain to use at times the fonts on it are likeable.
