As a techie, the specs of a device or gadget is a MUST for me. Even for average users, specs is and should be an important aspect before they buy the item.

And you think that he could make a better choice if the Fire focused on specs and not on its integration with the Amazon ecosystem?

What spec would demonstrate "snappy" performance?

Did you choose your Kindle over a Nook because of the processor?

I guess comparing CPU performance with a flavor of Android would be the 'techy' way to go about things, but I suspect, in the case of readers and tablets, it would be like comparing apples to oranges. Right now, I think this is the best we can do. When I used to buy video cards, I used benchmarks -- fps in this game or that. Lately, I use the Windows Experience Index (WEI) to compare Windows computers. Maybe some clever coder (or magazine) will write a benchmark utility to objectively compare performance.

No. Didn't need to -- just brought one home from Staples to try it out for a couple weeks. I liked it and kept it.

No --- I have always said you need BOTH. Probably 100 times by now. And yes, I believe the Fire would be a better device if it had 16GB of memory and an expansion slot. And I believe the only reason Amazon left those out is profit, it ties you to their cloud. It definitely is not for the benefit of the buyer to underspec the devices.

I think that a lot of the compromises were simply to keep the price under $200. That's an important spec.
