Jon, why do you think it's the author's job to make a book customizable to that extent by the reader (very few of whom would want to do this kind of thing)?

Sure, it can be fixed, but the time to fix can be a lot and there is no reason for it. All Smashwords has to do is allow the author to upload an already created eBook in the various formats and done. Then you can make sure that what you post is clean code.
You're saying that all indie authors should learn to do the coding in all of these formats, and code according to your standards. Not going to happen. Most authors are doing well if they get a document into satisfactory shape for an auto-conversion, whether it's by SW, Calibre, KDP, Pubit, or Apple.

How do you think most writers get their epub formatted books? They feed it through Calibre, or through the Pubit or Apple version of Meatgrinder (or KDP for the mobi format). Most of them are not going to hand-code their books.

For most writers, if they get an ebook file that looks good in tests in the major reader formats, that's good enough. Get back to the writing.

Yes, and I agree about that. The fact is, if you can get your book up in the Kindle store, you're 90% of the way to getting it up in the other stores. It's really not much more work getting it into SW, BN, etc--at least, if you're in the U.S., and you don't have geo-restrictions that you have to worry about. That can be a big If, in some cases.

And you are wrong. This is not a vendetta against any format or reader. It's an issue of availability. An eBook only available from Amazon is an eBook that is not available to most people who read eBooks. And I am not talking just the USA. I'm talking world wide. People have a choice and going one format only takes away this choice.

You publish your book in ePub via Smashwords someone with a Kobo Touch or nook STR buys your book. This person then tries to use the configuration override options to make changes to how it looks. If this fails, that person may not buy from you again. If that person buys other eBooks from Smashwords and enough of them fail to be customized, that person may just stop buying from Smashwords. This comes from the way the meatgrinder there works in conjunction with Word.

Now maybe using something like Atlantis Word Processor or Open Office with one of the various ePub output plugins would work to solve these problems that plague ePub via Smashwords due to using Word as the source. I cannot say, but there are simple alternatives that might work if Smashwords allowed direct format uploading.

But I think that's exactly the point. People are being lazy and not taking that extra step. As a result, they're missing out on additional readers for their work. It's sad and depressing and for the reason you just pointed out above, it doesn't need to happen.

First: Jon, 95% of the e-books I read are in ePub.

Second: Since there are millions of more books in the world than I can possibly read in my lifetime, it's just a non-issue.

Third: If an author chooses for any reason to publish in any particular format or language, it is entirely their decision and I have no right or interest in castigating them for it...even if it is inconvenient for me. No, I do not believe the world revolves around me.

Fourth: You can wrap this topic anyway you want to, but it's the same rant you've propagated in uncounted forums and threads...it's old.

As I said before, please give it a rest.

Amazon is within their right to only sell to kindle owners. Does it suck for those who prefer other hardware? Yeah, but we just gotta deal.

Is that patent nonsense really the best response you can come up with? A gracious admission of your mistake would have been the way to go (imho).

It's telling that you couldn't actually deny your mistake.

Incorrect ?

Surely, you mean Amazon will gladly sell to ...ANYONE who reads ebooks who has got a kindle.

If they are glad to sell to anyone who reads ebooks, why don't they do away with DRM ?

Or do they want to old a total monopoly on ereading, "no toys allowed but ours"
