I'm in agreement with that! Although I would love to see a new design, I would jump on a K4 with the current design with the addition of a touch screen! We'd have the best of both worlds!

Have a K3 and an iPad2 and happy with both. I'll wait for the K5 or K6 for my next eReader upgrade <G>.

True. The most likely scenario is the touch version gets shrunk a la the new nook. Your best hope is there will be a keyboarded k4. However, I don't see them keeping that up for the k5.

The publishers will have something to say about that. Like, no.

at least until they come out with a model with a sd-card slot. Don't know why they removed it when the first Kindle had it .

I would like the following:

Expandable memory (SD Card slot).
Bring Back the row of Number keys.

Menus with Roll over functionality.
Hot Keys for screen rotation etc.
A better MP3 Interface.
The ability to have Sub-Collections.

I wonder if it's possible to have a backlit e-ink display?

No, it isn't. eInk screen are opaque, hence can't be lit from behind. Sony tried a side-lit device (the PRS-700) a while ago, but it was a complete failure: the light diffusion layer on top of the screen had a pretty awful affect on the screen clarity.

I can imagine a subscription based service focussing on genre books that never make it into pbook form.

I can also imagine a Book of the Month Club type of subscription, where you pay your $9.99 and get to choose one or two books from a selection of books, either genre or general, which also come out in print.

And I can imagine that Oprah wakes up one morning and starts a subscription based version of her book club.

And when I do this imagining, I think of the Kindle Cloud Reader and consider how it might be the platform for implimenting this kind of thing on a streaming Netflix basis.

I just hope they don't completely do away with the physical keyboard. I put lotion on my hands all the time and a touch screen just would not work for me. I'd have big lotion fingerprints on my screen, lol.

But I had over 1.5 gb of space remaining on the Kindle. More storage space is not useful unless they have a processor that can actually handle that quantity of files. If this is improved, I would consider upgrading since I could sell my K3 and not have to pay too much more.
isnt that a memory issue as opposed to cpu ?.. also might be a bug with the silly indexing thing kindle has turned on by default.. was more designed for people adding a book or 2 to it a week, adding say more than 20 or so at once adds a huge overhead without the indexing disabled.. adding 1000 heh, you cant blame amazon for not foreseeing that, I guess in theyr minds if you can afford to spend about 5+ grand on books at once, why are you buying one of the cheapest ebook readers available .. I guess probably the best way without hacking kindle atall is to add 10 books a day, and leaving it plugged in.. no idea how long it takes to index each book. It is such a dumb feature, maybe 1% of kindle users actually use the search index hehe, it is the same in vista, and I am guessing windows 7.. just sits and eats up cpu time and memory unless you disable it.

As for storage space, you are right in that the kindle has enuf space but hmm,, if they added a micro sdhc slot to kindle 4 I would be a very happy person, costs about £10/-15 uk for a 16gig micro sdhc.. more than enuf for my entire music collection .. always seems silly to me using pc to play music / mp4 player / using kindle itelf for radio streams.. or heh, using psp for radio streams etc.. stick in a microsdhc slot and I would never have to use any of the above

Honestly they could do nothing but add a faster cpu and I would buy it. Not like the device is that expensive, and I could gift my current Kindle to a friend.

I did not go from K2 to K3, and I will continue to hold out for better pocketability and either sub-collection support or true directory and sub-directory support.

There is also a long list of nice to haves that are overdue, but the above would be enough to get me to buy.

What is it about a touch screen reader do you not like?
First of all: when I touch something, I like the real "haptic" response. I am a touch typist and I stay away from all solutions that require looking at the keys while I am typing. The current capacitive screens as well as IR ones don't offer any haptic response, the best that they can do is offer vibration, which sort of imitates a real "touch" response. With old resistive screens I could somehow feel when I was touching the screen and felt sure when typing. Currently I have two phones, one with capacitive screen (Android by Samsung) and the other one with resistive (WM 6.5 by HTC). Writing a text message on the capacitive screen is for me a nightmare, whereas the resistive one (combined with extra haptic response through vibration) is OK. But in an e-reader a resistive screen would not work, as it needs a layer on top of the physical screen.

Incidentally, I got used to Grafitti system (on Palm OS), because I hardly needed to look at the characters I was writing. Current touch screens with software keyboards impede my writing. And why am I so obsessed with writing? Mostly, because when I am reading a book (mostly non-fiction) I annotate it quite a lot. I also like to use dictionaries and other reference works when I am reading, which obviously involves text searches. All in all, the touch screen without an efficient way of entering text is a step backwards for me.
