I see Christopher Brookmyre has quite a few titles on B&N. Are there any particular ones you would recommend?

Well some of his books have recurring characters and some are stand-alone. I think I'd start with his first one "Quite Ugly One Morning" to see if you like his writing. But a really good stand-alone one which is more suspense/action/humour than mystery/bigtwist is "All Fun and Games Until Someone Loses an Eye".

I'd love to hear how you get on

Thanks for the Christopher Brookmyre suggestions, Unusual. I think I'll give him a try as well!

Oops! Not available in the US as ebooks, as far as I can tell. I was able to read a snippet online and I am intrigued!

I've read every Brookmyre book, and agree they are great. But be advised, if you are looking for Reacher style writing, these are nothing like the same style. Also, if you like Brookmyre, you may want to try Colin Bateman, who is his Irish equivalent.

Just an FYI, Tom Cruise is set to play Jack Reacher in One Shot. When I think of Jack Reacher, Tom Cruise is the LAST person I would think of to play him.
I was near apoplexic when I hear this. One of the fundamental aspects of Reacher's character and persona is his size. He often doesn't have to say anything, as his appearance says is for him. Cruise will never be able to carry it off. Ridiculous casting.

I don't know who I'd choose - possibly an unknown, but one person that springs to mind, as he can play the hard man very well (remember "300"?) is Gerard Butler.

I didn't even think of Gerard Butler. He would have been good too. I think the resurgence of this thread is telling me that I must go purchase Second Son.

Didn't think of Gerard Butler. Tom Cruise is just so wrong for the part.

Hey, Reacherites: I just ran into this contest. Check it out! It's a hypothethical contest between the 8 best protagonists and the 8 best villains (as per the author's original choice ... and I guess he decides the outcomes too.)

Unfortunately, I saw the final winner, before backtracking to start at the beginning of the contest. But here's the start:
http://www.criminalelement.com/blogs...he-contestants

Keep scrolling down past the reader comments, and you'll find a link to the next round of the competition. It's pretty good, as far as I've read through it!

I too think this is a spectacular piece of casting - WRONGLY !
It really is ridiculous - and no matter what special effects/boxes/pits they think up, I will still be unable to watch even a trailer without laughing.

Reacher has to be an intimidating figure, even sitting on a park bench picking his nose !

I do enjoy the books - to my own surprise, frankly, but they are so well constructed -
and you know exactly what you're getting.

But I couldn't take Cruise seriously in a film, really. A worse actor (yes there are) who looked the part could well pull it off.

Anyone read The Affair yet? I'm on the waiting list at the library and hope to have it in a week.

I finally read Second Son - long waiting list at the library. It was very yummy! It left me wanting more! Reacher sure had attitude as a teen but what else would you expect. Since the book emphasized his size even as an adolescent (no surprise there), I kept thinking about this thread and Tom Cruise (insert disappointed sigh here).
