The non-profit US Chess Federation still has records for tournaments I played in when I was a boy. That was a bothersome number of decades ago. I don't think long term storage of electronic data is going to be a problem.

Well, this thread compelled me to go and redownload and strip all of my Fictionwise books last night. There is a VERY good chance I could log on there someday and my account could be gone. Panicked for a moment because I no longer use the credit card I used to purchase the books.

Why it matters:
Formats have already come and gone - most of the people posting here are fairly new to ebooks, but they've been around a lot longer than the Kindle or even the Sony. Most of my early ebooks were in .Lit format. Anyone here heard of that? No, probably not. Amazon was in the ebook business once before. When they got out, they pulled the plug on the entire thing. People lost access to books they had already paid for. It wasn't pretty. If you think Amazon (or any other supplier) is going to supply you books forever just because it's profitable NOW, you're dreaming. If you think the tech is not going to change and you'll have access to your books forever, you're dreaming. If you get locked into one store, be it Amazon, Apple or any other, you'll find it painful when you have to change, and some day you WILL have to change. It's the nature of technology. I can't believe that in this tech world we live in there are so many naive people. |

plus, amazon will always make the best devices unless hearst or murdoch gets into the ereader business. and by the time this device breaks, i may be sick of ebooks altogether. hopefully a newspaper company releases a reader. might get that. Last edited by Ditchleyportrait; 06-14-2011 at 02:08 PM. |

I'm not saying that the current situation is ideal. But neither is the sky falling in. I'm not going to get all in a tizzy about 99c eBooks. |

can't be better than the kindle. perhaps features-wise, but i don't see it with the problems the nook has. |

My moral compass allows me to download books off the darknet that I've already paid for. I have no worries about switching devices because anything I already paid for (almost anything) is on the darknet in most formats.
