The point was not whether they wonder about it, but whether it matters. If Amazon switch to a different format, but it still works exactly the same, why should a user care?
Do I need to know what backend database the MobileRead forums use?

The non-profit US Chess Federation still has records for tournaments I played in when I was a boy. That was a bothersome number of decades ago. I don't think long term storage of electronic data is going to be a problem.

Well, this thread compelled me to go and redownload and strip all of my Fictionwise books last night. There is a VERY good chance I could log on there someday and my account could be gone. Panicked for a moment because I no longer use the credit card I used to purchase the books.

I guess that there are more amazon customers than there are chess players, and I'm also guessing that on average there are more books being bought per person than there are games played per person.

How long has Amazon been around for anyway?

Why it matters:

Formats have already come and gone - most of the people posting here are fairly new to ebooks, but they've been around a lot longer than the Kindle or even the Sony. Most of my early ebooks were in .Lit format. Anyone here heard of that? No, probably not.

Amazon was in the ebook business once before. When they got out, they pulled the plug on the entire thing. People lost access to books they had already paid for. It wasn't pretty.

If you think Amazon (or any other supplier) is going to supply you books forever just because it's profitable NOW, you're dreaming. If you think the tech is not going to change and you'll have access to your books forever, you're dreaming.

If you get locked into one store, be it Amazon, Apple or any other, you'll find it painful when you have to change, and some day you WILL have to change.

It's the nature of technology.

I can't believe that in this tech world we live in there are so many naive people.

Of course we have... it's not that exclusive of a club (or that long ago).

I've got a ton of them. Should have seen my face when MS stopped supporting MS Reader and my version corrupted. Thanks to Calibre, things have brightened up.

Or a competitor gets out a new device that makes you think "Hey, i need that".

Tech evolves, you own use and needs might change too.
this will never happen. many of the competitors now use the kindle app anyway. i don't mind losing ebooks that would be gathering dust as real books, and i probably won't because there will be many, many more devices compatible with kindle.

plus, amazon will always make the best devices unless hearst or murdoch gets into the ereader business.

and by the time this device breaks, i may be sick of ebooks altogether. hopefully a newspaper company releases a reader. might get that.

If need by, I can remove the DRM. So far, I haven't felt the need.

And then I'll change. In the meantime Amazon have a large selection of cheap books I'm happy to read. These arguments all apply to Adept DRM books too, and I'm more comfortable being tied to Amazon than Adobe.
I'm not saying that the current situation is ideal. But neither is the sky falling in. I'm not going to get all in a tizzy about 99c eBooks.

Actually, if you read the article in the OP, you will see that that isn't true, the new nook is better than the kindle. I was the point of the whole discussion.

the kindle has a browser. the new nook has remnants of a browser. the new nook has ghosting issues. the kindle does not.

can't be better than the kindle. perhaps features-wise, but i don't see it with the problems the nook has.

My moral compass allows me to download books off the darknet that I've already paid for. I have no worries about switching devices because anything I already paid for (almost anything) is on the darknet in most formats.
