People you both. It boils down to your personal liking. I have kindle but don't use either one. My answer may not be what you're looking for but is the only honest answer, I can think of. Wish you the best for whatever you choose.

you save so much money by having ePub and the ability to shop anywhere you want.

Really so what you're telling me is that with any ePUB reader I can buy books from the three biggest online retailers on the market (B&N, Amazon, Apple iBooks).

My question is this. What does it matter what eReader a person happens to love or buy? It is their choice. As it should be. My reasons for buying one over the other is something I put a lot of work into. If someone asks for an opinion, they should be told the good points and bad points of all the readers out here. One doesn't have to go around bashing the other reader to try what, to score points? I have seen a lot of bashing of the different readers on this forum. It is almost as if we had stock in one of the companies or the other. I say, to each his own and just be happy with what you have.

I'm off my box now.

have both

I have both but I use my nook the most. The deciding factor is that I read a lot in dark areas (at night, in the car, etc.) and I love the backlight. I also really love the color screen - especially since I am trying to convert to all e-books. Just my two cents.

You seem to have a nook color. The OPs question is regarding the nook classic eink reader. Different beast entirely.

However text on the kindle looks better. I like the kindle keyboard. I also like the kindle weight.
Library is not an issue as I do not check out books now and There appears to be enough free books around the web in both formats.

Is there any good way to make this choice?
Sure, Sony.

So has anyone come up with an objective comparison of the numbers involved? That is the number of commercial mobi books from Amazon vs the numbers of commercial ePub books from everyone else. Also, the numbers of best sellers available in either format, or say, the numbers available from the top 100 selling authors. And how about the average price differences and discounts between Amazon vs "the others".

As we all know, free ePub/mobi format books that are not DRMed are so trivial to convert to any other format with Calibre that differences in numbers there are not even worth mentioning. Not that DRM really is much of a hurdle anyway.

After having owned both the kindle and nook, my opinion is that ebook availability for either is a non-issue or, in the rare instances it is, it tends to be more of an issue for ePub than mobi.

I'm in Norway, but "our" book store is in the US. A little annoying for me as I'm British and I'd like British English localisations rather than American.

I would still like to see hard numbers. I see a lot of subjective opinion on this but that's incredibly unreliable as we tend to see with our biases. I think it would be a very useful resource for those who really want to purchase a reader based on the content available to them. Of course, not everyone is interested in the best sellers so a decent compilation of stats would include other information like the availability of books in specific genres.

The numbers, I'm sure, are close and irrelevant.
There may be an odd specific title or two that can be found in one store but not another, but the main issue is, I think, promotions.

I have a Kindle and like shopping at Amazon, but Kobo does give out some great coupons. If I can get a book for free from Kobo with a coupon when it would have cost me $1.99 or 99 cents at Amazon, I'll go for it.
Obviously, Amazon has little incentive to make this terribly easy to do, and likely figures (probably correctly in many cases) that the simple integrated Kindle buying experience from Amazon will offset many folks desire comparison shop.

I was thinking that perhaps the desire to patronize one company vs another was a factor, but why on Earth would you buy a reader from a company if you didn't want to buy books from them?
