A few weeks ago I was looking for something a little different.
And now I'm going to let you guys in on some great savings. Go to FlightGear and give them my name (SameOldStory). You'll be surprised how much you'll save on a great slight simulator. (UPDATE - Please don't use the name on my post office poster!) This is only for MR members so don't go spreading it around too much. The first 100 people will get free planes! The price is (drum roll) Spoiler:
FlightGear works on Mac, Linux, and Windows. Flying high with FlightGear "FlightGear is a top notch and highly accurate free software flight simulator. The software has no kill or be killed situations." (Not quite true, I've killed myself dozens of times. ![]() You can fly with just a mouse and keyboard, but you'll soon want a joystick. Get a cheep one because you just may want to buy a yoke. Last edited by SameOldStory; 02-01-2011 at 08:17 PM. |

Hay, everybody. I didn't mean to kill off this post!!!!
![]() ![]() I'm sorry. ![]() I was going to ask about frugal (ahem, cheap) monthly cell phone/tablet data rates. Not on the phone/tablets themselves but the actual price options for service. Trying to compare prices is next to impossible even when reading articles purporting to do so. I'm not a texter or a twitter. I prefer doing my email from a real keyboard and large screen. I prefer the same when looking for ebooks. I might download small to medium PDF’s (manuals etc.) from time to time. I have a company supplied cell phone so I don't need to use it to make calls from, although I do use Skype for calls occasionally. This is about a desire to occasionally connect to the internet while away from home. The company I work for will not pay for either the tablet or the monthly bills. If it's not very cheep I'll forget the whole deal. I have a company supplied Toshiba laptop/tablet (about 2.5 pounds) with a Sprint 3G USB internet connection. But a 7 to 10 inch tablet would be a lot easier to use at the top of a ladder. I like the ipad a lot, but the price (and to some degree the Apple app restrictions) make it a no-go for me. ![]() |

OK. I found a way to make a wifi/company supplied wireless internet computer to work (maybe).
Go to Lifehacker for a CNET video showing how to do it for windows or Mac. I'm sure that there must be a way to do it with Linux too. I'd played with internet sharing (using a router) back in the Windows 98 days and it worked very well. But I simply haven’t thought about it for a very long time. Now, remember. This post is about using a wifi tablet in an environment where you would not normally have wifi access. In this case I have a company supplied 3G USB connection and two laptops. One company supplied, and the other one mine. I also saw links on how to use your cell phone to tether to a laptop/netbook but my cell phone isn't capable of that. So why did I say "(maybe)" before? Well, some companies IT departments (like my company) lock down what you can or can not do with your "company" computer. In my case I also have an extra laptop of my own. I've used it with the 3G USB connector for almost 2 years while working (and for work related matters) with no official notice from the company. This use would be a continuation of that practice. Suddenly a wifi only tablet looks a lot better. Last edited by SameOldStory; 02-03-2011 at 11:06 PM. |

I felt kind of guilty today. I went to Target to buy shampoo and conditioner, and my the conditioner on my favorite brand had a dollar of coupon, but not the shampoo. I couldn't bring myself to take one off the conditioner bottles, but looking on the bottom of the shelf I found one loose, so I grabbed it.
But not guilty enough that it stopped me from saving another dollar... |
