iPad in UK
A balanced (?) review from Charlie Brooker of The Guardian. He likes it...bit not for ebooks:

And also The Times (UK) this morning has an advertisment on its page 3 about how invaluable the iPad will be to read the newspaper each day (available last 5-6 issues). Pay a monthly fee for the app and a subscription for the paper. We would need 2 ....
Better still would be to offer an iPad (or better equivalent) and subscription as one (inexpensive) deal ! Nice idea but it is hardly cost effective for me. |

I don't think Charlie Brooker's ever done a balanced review of an Apple product in his entire career; he probably keeps the teenagers with long lists of computer components in their forum signatures amused (see the follow-on comments after the piece) at least until their mum calls them down for their tea - or perhaps he just 'knows' his audience?
Still, at least he puts the weight he moans about [feel free to insert your own pithy comment about weak-wristed journalists here] into context - roughly the same size and weight (but not thickness, obviously...) as a hardback; look what a dog that format turned out to be. Pete |

If Apple is going to sell a million of these in twenty minutes, or whatever their target is, then most buyers will be people who never pick up a computer magazine, a gadget mag or hang about on forums discussing such things. Most buying decisions will be informed by "reviews" like this - however inadequate they might seem to people who do read such mags and hang about on such forums. And I guess Apple, and all the other mass market consumer goods producers, are pretty pleased that that's the case.

and as if we need no further hint that iPad has arrived, it's had a prominent role on the BBC at the Turkish Grand Prix - being cuddled by one of the three presenters (the iPad , that is ) ....
