Excellent so far.
And they were all good to excellent.

Next up was Monster Hunter: Guardian by Larry Correia and Sarah A. Hoyt.

Great action fun in the Monster Hunter universe, as expected.

next up: Street of the Five Moons by Elizabeth Peters. A random pick from the TBR, the second in her Vicky Bliss mysteries.

Which was a fun, light read.

Harlequin looks interesting. In the US amazon store, it’s called The Archer’s Tale.

And good fun it was, in the expected way, being the insertion of a story into the historical record, with any minor deviations noted in the afterword.

Next up: A Dance for the King by Anton Du Beke. The 7th in his Hotel Buckingham series. Enjoyable froth.

And it was indeed enjoyable froth. With a bit of good historical background too.

Next up: An Artist of the Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro.

I've just read one of his most recent books, Klara and the Sun. Now for one of his earliest books.

Finished the novel by Lydia Davis (The End of the Story), her novel about an obsession told from the POV of a female character attempting to write the novel that we are reading.

Superb. (However, I suspect it may not be one that appeals to a majority of readers of literary fiction.)

Now reading a bundled 2-novel set by the GREAT Barry N. Malzberg (unfortunately, recently deceased): Fire / Machine.

It was OK. Much more just a literary novel than Klara and the Sun, with an interesting way of telling the story, but that I didn't find as novel (IMO, and apologies for the unintentional pun) as he seemed to think it was.

Next up: The Bruising of Qilwa by Naseem Jamnia. A recent freebie.

I finished Familiaris. It was a good read, not a great read. A bit different from the original book Edgar Sawtelle. It tells the story of Edgar's grandparents from meeting through death and the quirky characters they befriend along the way. It had a humorous side to it, that I don't remember from Edgar Sawtelle. It was seemingly less about the dogs than I remember Edgar being, although they were still a central part of it. I need to read Edgar again, I preferred it. All in all, l I'm glad I read the prequel.

I've started Babylonia by Casati, a historical fiction account of the empire of Ancient Assyria.

It felt like it was trying to cram too much into one book. The villain was also obvious from half way through. It was OK.

I've recently finished Antkind by Charlie Kaufman.

I've been ruminating for weeks what to write about it and all I have got is that I am glad that I read all 700+ pages. If anyone wants to start a discussion thread I would participate.

Two of the series I follow just released surprise stories this week. YAY!

I just saw that Lois McMaster Bujold just published The Adventure of the Demonic Ox at the normal places. This is the latest Penric and Desdemona novella, approximately 36,000 words and 139 pages. It doesn't say this specifically, but I think this is the latest chronologically as well. It was announced a couple months ago, but no release date was listed.

Links and info on her blog: https://www.goodreads.com/author_blo...-arrives-today

I'm waiting for Kobo to show it since Amazon will not let me download it to the version of Kindle for PC that I use.

This will be the next thing I read after: Rapport: Friendship, Solidarity, Communion, Empathy by Martha Wells

This is the latest short story featuring Murderbot and was released yesterday after the season finale of the Apple TV+ show.

Per the announcement post:
Quote:
It can be read as a standalone story for anyone who has finished Artificial Condition, the second book in The Murderbot Diaries.

Which was excellent, with some good info. And now looking rather prescient.

Next was A Fine and Private Place by Peter S. Beagle. Lovely fantasy set in a graveyard.

Currently reading: Resurrection Men by Ian Rankin. The 13th in his Inspector Rebus series.

Not my usual fare, but I'm really enjoying Kevin Wilson's Run for the Hills (audiobook ). The scattered half-siblings of a father who makes a lifetime habit of leaving his current families and starting new ones (remaking himself in the process) team up and go on a quest to find and confront him. It manages to be funny and touching without getting overly cheesy.

The audiobook is read by Marin Ireland for those who might be interested. She's done a fantastic job in my opinion.

At the urging of siblings, nephews, and cousins, I've begun the first book in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Dinniman. I am amused, and can honestly say I'm enjoying the book (audiobook narrated by Jeff Hays), but I doubt highly that my amusement/enjoyment is going to last for seven books. That's my fault, not the author's. I just can't stick that long with the same premise/characters any more. Not even if it's the very best of stories written by the very best of authors. My internal series bucket filled up long ago. I have no more room. I'll try to make it through three books (if my interest holds that long) so I can tell my family I gave it my best shot.

I don't think it's even finished at book 7. I've read the first two. I'm keeping them well spaced out so I don't get too tired of the idea.
