The 4.42.23296 firmware is available to download and manually update for the Clara BW and Clara Colour. So if anyone else wants to try this firmware who has a new Clara can do so.

Put in on ON, there is no change at all .
I did notice an effect when I generated an image consisting of black/white diagonal lines.

Thats very strange. I'm on that build; run with wifi disabled and have no such issue.

I submitted logs to kobo help today, so hopefully that will give them insight as to the cause. In the meantime, I downgraded to the previous build and it's fixed the problem.

Do you read Kobo Plus books? I'm wondering if that's related. Opening my Kobo Plus book triggers Wi-Fi to turn on. I didn't try it with a purchased book since I read all those in KOReader.

It's possible that it isn't a bug. Perhaps Kobo is implementing stricter security to prevent you from cancelling Kobo Plus and continuing to read the books you already have with Wi-Fi off, or something.

I'm curious whether byrhias was reading Kobo Plus books. Anyway, next time I turn on Wi-Fi I'll let it update and then test with a book I own to see if it still happens. I feel like it has to be a bug, because it was making my battery drain like crazy, faster than it did when I used to keep Wi-Fi on all the time. It's like it's syncing repeatedly in the background or something.

Alright I let it update again and tested with a book I own. It still turns on Wi-Fi every time I open a book. So it's unrelated to Kobo Plus.

Hi sorry! I've only just seen your reply. I ended up contacting Kobo Help and they told me that they're aware of this issue but no ETA on when the fix is coming. They told me to remove any saved bluetooth device (like my bluetooth page turner) and that fixed the problem. Since I'm quite attached to using my page turner, I ended up downgrading to the previous firmware for the time being until a new firmware is available with the fix. Hope this helps!

Ah, good to know it's related to having a Bluetooth page turner! I guess that's why not everyone is experiencing the problem. How do you use Bluetooth without Wi-Fi? I've avoided using it since downgrading because it has always turned on Wi-Fi when I enable Bluetooth, and I didn't want it downloading and installing the latest firmware.

Yup mine does that too. I just manually turn off WiFi once my bluetooth page turner is connected. Ah yes I make sure to turn it off immediately. I made that mistake once, I dilly-dallied a bit too long and it automatically upgraded to the latest firmware

Welp, you made the right choice. I let mine update to test whether deleting the saved bluetooth device would fix it, and it did not. Interestingly, it's not only turning on wifi when I open a book, but also bluetooth, even though I make sure both are off before opening it. Time to downgrade again!

Assuming it's available for your firmware version, you might want to apply the patch to always ask before performing firmware updates, so you can say no.
