Is there a way to de-animate the viewer?
If I use the arrow keys to move up or down in a book, the viewer animates scrolling. I don't know if it animates in certain other circumstances too.

I am setting up a Linux system, looking for a reader app, and need to avoid most animation.

Okay. Page Mode, single column, wide margins works for me.
