Enhancement - Prompt on overwrite source

I managed to do an EPUB-EPUB conversion on a book when I meant to do EPUB-KEPUB. The result meant I lost some info not related directly to the display but which was useful to me in further editing. I don't think there was any way to recover the info as the source EPUB had been overwritten.

It occurred to me that it would be useful if Calibre issued a prompt and requested confirmation when a conversion was due to overwrite the source - EPUB - EPUB is my concern but I don't know if there are any other "conversions" that would benefit from such a confirmation.

You should have an EPUB and an ORIGINAL-EPUB, unless you turned it off via this tweak:

Thanks for that - I hadn't turned it off but I thought at the time that the original-epub was the result of me "polishing" book to update the cover and metadata. I deleted it before I realised I had a problem.

Oddly I did search for the deleted original-epub in my recycled bin and found it but when I restored it it disappeared completely. Where it went I have been unable to discover.

Anyway it seems that my suggestion was unnecessary.

NEVER restore a Calibre Library ITEM from the recycle bin (without jumping thru additional hoops). (Unfortunate that Restore does not have an option: to other location)
The DB has no idea that you did something with the OS (the common warning we give is 'don't mess beneath the skirts", well in this case, the OS did it.) When you use Calibre, it updated the list of formats

The hoop. Go MOVE that file using the OS (this is a exception to the rule), to a temp location, THEN add it back (suggest the MDE, or details for the target), using Drag&Drop.

It's even more unfortunate that calibre moves things to the Windows Recycle Bin that cannot be restored using that tools Restore feature which predates calibre by decades.

I have found that the file CAN be restored. However that is not sufficient if the database also needs to be updated which the Restore does not do.

Restore (in general) can be iffy when the target folder is also gone (what happens if you delete a Author or Title (not just a format) in Calibre.

But I will agree, it is seriously broken, because if you trip the fail, the file in in limbo and no longer locatable.

Calibre's Remove Book does something like this:
  • creates a temporary folder in the library's parent folder e.g "D:\Calibre\Libraries\Books deleted e3hmxewg"
  • copy's the selected library book folders into it
  • does a permanent delete of the book folder(s) from from the library (and author folders if they're empty)
  • does a soft delete of the temporary folder, which is a move to the Recycle Bin

The Recycle Bin Restore feature will recreate the temporary folder and its contents.

This has been discussed on numerous occasions, Kovid has stated his reasons why he does it this way, IIRC it relates to maintaining library integrity.

Maybe there should be a specific tool to Recover a book after a Recycle Bin Restore - i.e. basically Add from e.g. "D:\Calibre\Libraries\Books deleted e3hmxewg" and then delete that folder.
