Not sure about that. My Sonys and PocketBooks have the best battery life of any of my eReaders and they both turn off completely after a certain number of minutes. I've got Sonys from about 15 years ago that still hold a good charge.

That is so not true. Maybe the energy consumption is lower if you turn on airplane mode but it's certainly draining the battery on sleep.

My guess is that by not allowing Kindle's to be turned off, it wears out the battery faster and that would make people buy another Kindle because the battery is shot.

It should not be draining fast unless it's left on Wi-fi when sleeping or indexing. If you are going to store it for months, turning it off would save the battery. The concept is if you use it often, then having to completely turn on and off the device would drain it more than simply leaving it in sleep mode.

Situation 1: wifi off, sleeping, no indexing.

Situation 2: Powered off.

Situation 1 is not draining the battery fast, but it is draining the battery much faster than situation 2.

I also say that it is due to a programmed obsolescence: keep the battery on all the time so that it breaks down as soon as possible

Either that post is outdated or the writer didn’t do their research. Long press on power button just turns off the display and goes to sleep. It doesn’t actually power off the device.

Did a battery test before.

Gotta say, Kindles seem to like to phone home a lot. Also noticed battery on the registered PW4 seems to have degraded more quickly. I think its standby time now is just 1-2 months before getting completely drained.

A ten year old battery in a Sony PRS-350 has better "standby" than a newish battery in a PW3, because if not used the PRS-350 turns off.
The Kindles are meant to be used at least once a week, ideally more often. They are not suited for once a month or less often use.
It's a problem on some Kindle models that have no user setting for date because they reset the time & date if the battery goes flat. Worse on the Cellular /Mobile only models.

Very stupid design decision. All my other makes have a true off, except maybe the Palm Z22 which can sleep for months.

I don't turn on WiFi (or Cell/Mobile) on any ereaders, except on Kindle to re-sync date after battery flat, which inexplicably takes a day.

With the 350, it does power off after 24 or 48 hours of non-use. I like that. I just wish Kobo had allowed us to set 48 hours of non-use until it powers off. The settings they have are way too short for power-off due to non-use.

The only time this really annoys me is when I’ve sold kindles. I like to fully charge them, then factory reset before posting to the buyer. It’s always a pain trying to get the kindle to shut off enough to box up.

Yup. 48 hours is perfect, IMO. Gives you some wiggle room if you ordinarily read at the same time every day, more or less. The Kobo settings are useless; heck, a phone call could turn off the reader, or a meal. And it’s not as if it hasn’t been suggested and I assume it would be a trivial change to the software.

Still, overall my Kobo batteries are holding up excellently; the one exception is the Aura One and that was never very good.

My H2O's battery is pretty good for 6 years. But eventually it's going to get shut off once I get my forthcoming Libra 2 sorted.
