I didn't know any other way. I had used the one-line addition to developer settings in the file .kobo\Kobo\Kobo ereader.conf, but it quit working.
I had read that a previous update took the landscape option out, and I didn't know the firmware upgrade would add it back in.

So that's safe for an amateur to do? Thanks

Kobo updates (KoboRoot.tgz) aren't necessairly "firmware upgrades" in the same sense as "BIOS upgrade". It mostly depends on what is in them. To answer your question, patching is safe.

Why do you need to use NickelMenu just for this ONE add - I don't understand.
NickelMenu does inversion, if that's desired, unlike the patch. Also, if someone doesn't already use the patches, NM can be more convenient.

I am having trouble with getting the Dark Mode toggle to work with my new Kobo Libra 2. When I installed Nickelmenu and added Dark Mode to the config file (on the reader and in the main menu), I get the following message:

Dark Mode
unknown setting name 'toggle' (arg: 'toggle :dark_mode') (src/action_cc.cc:356)

I was able to get Dark Mode working in my old Libra H2O so I din't think the config i=or installation is the problem.

I was also unable to uninstall NickelMenu using the created 'uninstall' text document. Even if Nickelmenu is not doing harm, it's nice to know that I can uninstall it.

Any help with these two issues is appreciated.

I deleted the config file, but still ahve Nickelmenu installed without a config file.

You need to use this version of Nickel Menu; earlier ones don't work for Dark Mode:

If you’re using a Libra 2 you can toggle dark mode from the reading settings on the second page from within a book. You don’t need nickelmenu since your device natively supports the new dark mode.

But yes if you want to use nickelmenu to toggle it from outside of the book you’ll need the proper version of nickelmenu

Thanks everyone. I installed that version and it now works (I'm not sure what version I had as I thought I had installed the latest release).

I'm still unable to uninstall Nickelmenu following these directions:

Quote:
To uninstall NickelMenu, just create a new file named uninstall in .adds/nm/, or trigger the failsafe mechanism by immediately powering off the Kobo after it starts booting.
I tried creating a text file simply called "uninstall with no content, but it just sits there and Nickelmenu does not uninstall.

I was also unable to trigger the failsafe.

Thanks again for your help.

Don't make it a text file; just make a file called "uninstall" with no file extension.

Thanks for your reply. I tried this without success. Do I need to delete the config file first?

Is there anything else I can try to remove NickelMenu?

I know Nickelmenu is doing no harm sitting on my Kobo Libra 2, but I would prefer to remove it as I'm not going to be using it.

After adding the 'uninstall' file, you need to restart your Kobo.

Thanks.

I installed NM ages ago, so I'm not that familiar anymore about how the installation works. How do I update it without losing my configuration?

Will there eventually be an options for toggling bluetooth and turning it on/off?

Yes, and for the audiobook and notebook stuff, in the next release (as soon as I have enough time to work on it).
