Amazon announce 6.8" Paperwhite Kindles

Do the paperwhite and oasis have the same screen? The Oasis says 7" and the paperwhite says 6.8". With the complaints of the PW4's screen, maybe the Oasis screen will be better?

The screen of the Oasis is slightly better than the Kobo Libra, and the Kobo Libra is better than the PW4 (or so the people say who have seen both; I haven't seen the PW4).

No, the Oasis has a better screen than the PW4. Not sure of all the techs, but the LED lighting difference is large.

What I meant to ask was the physical screen (ordered from eink (or whoever)) different (or will be different) between the newest Oasis and the PW5? Is the 7" Oasis just a round up of 6.8" by Amazon?

I doubt anyone knows for sure at this point. Personally I don't think they have the same screen. 7'' is not the same as 6.8''.

Well, dammit, I'm just hoping that I'm happier with this new PPW than I have been with the Oasis. I lurved my Voyage, but now I'm accustomed to the Oasis screen size/clarity. If the cursed thing didn't dig into my hand with that lopsided bar there, I'd love it too. (sigh).

I feel like bloody Goldilocks. I'm still waiting on that final bowl of porridge.

No buttons and no lopsided shape. And much heavier. I wouldn't want it even for a tenth of this sum. A stylus is no replacement for page-turn buttons imho, nor is a remote (I want to hold my ereader in my hand while reading, and I don't want to hold a stylus or some other gadget in the other hand at the same time).

The cover allows me to stand the device up - don't need to hold it - and Bluetooth allows me to control it remotely.
Apart from that, Android makes me independent from getting reading material and from the reading application, and I can additionally write handwritten notes in the books.
I couldn't care less where I get my books from, even if they contain CARE DRM.
And on the 10 inch device, reading a newspaper or magazine through the PressReader app is nothing to scoff at either.

I’ve never seen an Oasis, my point of reference is the Voyage, which has a better screen than the PW4 (and according to some, better than the Oasis). This had nothing to do with LED lighting, but rather the materials in front of the display panel (which is I think the same panel). It seems to me the materials used on the PW4 were chosen to make it less susceptible to damage, and maybe reduce weight, at the cost of some transparency.

I would certainly appreciate better clarity if the PW5 has this, but damage resistance is also important. I don’t like to use a cover (weight, bulk) and so if the materials have prevented screen damage, I am happy about that.

I do really hope this Paperwhite will be on par with the Oasis 3 in term of sharpness, contrast and warm-colour management (the auto mode of the Oasis is perfectly handled)

Yes. As I said, I want to hold my reader, I don't want to put it on a desk or a table. And I don't want to control it remotely. I want to hold it in my hand like a book.

And I'm completely independent in where I get my books and where I read them, thanks to Calibre and Apprentice Alf. I don't have to read them in different apps. As you well know.
