The Gold Deadline is the second in Herbert Resnicow's Norma and Alexander Gold series, which was originally traditionally published back in the 1980s. It is free right now at Kindle US and UK.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KA3VBQ8
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gold-Deadli...dp/B01KA3VBQ8/

In addition, the first title, The Gold Solution, is long term at $0.99/£0.99 so if you'd like to read in order, it won't be too expensive to try both together.

Looking at previous posts, it looks as if these bundles of Gail Bowen/Joanne Kilbourn titles seem to go on sale every April, and here they are on sale again. There are two omnibuses that have three titles each, currently price-dropped to $7.99 each, and one omnibus with six titles, currently $8.99. Together these give you the first six titles in the series (the two 3-book ones) and then a short gap, and the 6-book omnibus gives you the 9th through 14th books. Sadly all of the books that are not part of the omnibuses are really expensive ($11.99-ish), and never seem to go on sale.

These links in a previous post are still good, and here are the links for the other omnibus:

The Joanne Kilbourn Mysteries, Volume 1, apa The Early Investigations of Joanne Kilbourn, contains Deadly Appearances, Murder at the Mendel, and The Wandering Soul Murders

Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...undle-volume-1

The Joanne Kilbourn Mysteries 3-Book Bundle Volume 2 contains: A Colder Kind of Death (which won the 1995 Arthur Ellis Award for Best Novel), A Killing Spring, and Verdict in Blood. It is $7.99.

The Joanne Kilbourn Mysteries 6-Book Bundle Volume 3 contains: The Last Good Day, The Endless Knot, The Brutal Heart, The Nesting Dolls, Kaleidoscope, and The Gifted. It is $8.99, which works out to only $1.50 per book.

The "Impossible Crime Murder Mystery" novels of James Scott Byrnside are currently on sale for $1.00 each at Amazon US.

Goodnight, Irene
Quote:
A brilliant detective...A baffling murder...An isolated manor...A list of less than perfect suspects with perfect alibis...No way out...It's going to be a long and deadly night.

Hired to stop a murder at a birthday party at a Mississippi Manor cut off from the world by The Great Flood of 1927, Detective Rowan Manory needs to solve a 20-year-old case to save his client, Robert Lasciva, from unwrapping a deadly and perhaps deserved gift of revenge.

The suspects are ready to celebrate. Unfortunately, one of them has plotted an audacious murder. Trapped by the flood, Manory must unmask the killer in the crowd before the bodies start dropping.
The Opening Night Murders
Quote:
Chicago. 1935. The Great Depression has brought America to its knees, and the people are dying for some entertainment. Luckily for them, a murder has been scheduled for opening night at The Red Rising Theater. When the lead actress receives a death threat, Detective Rowan Manory and his partner Walter Williams agree to take the case. Neither realizes the curtain is rising on the deadliest and most vexing mystery of their career. There will be 200 witnesses in the seats and not a single suspect on the stage. Could this be the perfect murder?
The Strange Case of the Barrington Hills Vampire
Quote:
In 1880, a vampire terrorized Barrington Hills, feasting on the locals and leaving their mutilated corpses as evidence. Now, forty years later, it’s happening again.

Detective Rowan Manory and his assistant Walter Williams are hired to investigate. They don’t believe in the undead, but nothing else could explain murders so bloodily impossible. How does the killer walk through walls? Why doesn’t it leave footprints in the snow? Who will it kill next?

Can the detectives solve the case before the vampire strikes again? Can you?

NOTE: These are apparently self-published but, though I have not yet read them myself, they have received very good reviews from several mystery bloggers. (See, for example: http://moonlight-detective.blogspot....ott%20Byrnside or https://theinvisibleevent.com/2020/1...cott-byrnside/ or https://cjcjcountdownjohnschristiejo...cott-byrnside/)

NOTE #2: One of the reviews states that The Opening Night Murders spoils Goodnight, Irene so should be read after that one. The Barrington Hills Vampire, though published third, is actually a prequel to the other two.

I remember reading a few of Janet Dawson's Jeri Howard books back in the 1990s, when they first came out, and I have vague memories of liking them, although I don't remember a lot of details. Still, that was enough for me to notice an omnibus of the first five titles when it popped up in my reading recommendations. And, the omnibus is free at Kindle US and UK right now.

Looking at eReaderIQ, it looks as if it goes free every few months, but never for very long, so grab it now if you want it. It has the first five titles in the series, so if you read the first one and like it, you're in luck - you have four more. There's also a second omnibus of later titles, and it goes free every now and then too, although not as often.

The Jeri Howard Anthology: Books 1-5, contains: Kindred Crimes, Till the Old Men Die, Take a Number, Don't Turn Your Back on the Ocean, and Nobody's Child (apa The Missing Child)

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MMYFWLV
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07MMYFWLV

Spoiler:
Quote:
The first five AWARD-WINNING Jeri Howard murder mysteries are now available at an unbelievable bargain!

Tough-as-nails Oakland PI Jeri Howard made a splash in Janet Dawson’s first book, winning Best First PI Novel from the Private Eye Writers of America. The next four mysteries only get more enticing!

“A welcome addition to this tough genre.” -The New York Times Book Review

Dawson’s Oakland is noir and brooding, while Jeri’s as savvy as Sam Spade, with something of Spade’s seen-it-all outlook.

"Jeri combines V.I.'s social conscience with Kinsey's badass attitude and a snappy narrative voice..." -Maureen Corrigan, Washington Post Book World

Readers who tear through offbeat detective novels featuring hard-boiled women sleuths will flip for Jeri Howard, especially if they enjoy Sue Grafton, Robert Dugoni, T.R. Ragan, Marcia Muller, and Sara Paretsky. The first half of this unforgettable series has never been on sale at a price like this!

KINDRED CRIMES
A puzzling missing persons case--a wife who disappears with the grocery money--keeps winding backward, revealing brand new secrets as fast as ancient skeletons can fall out of closets.

TILL THE OLD MEN DIE
The grisly murder of a sedate, widowed history professor, is written off as a random street crime until a woman turns up at his university, claiming to be his widow and demanding access to his "papers."

TAKE A NUMBER
Out of loyalty to a former client, Jeri takes on a nasty divorce case. The soon-to-be ex-husband winds up with a bullet in his back, and the prime suspect is Jeri's client.

DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON THE OCEAN
Jeri is looking to catch a respite from the PI life to relax and visit family in lovely Monterey on the California coast. Now, what's the worst thing that could happen on a PI's vacation? A dead body on the beach, most likely.

NOBODY'S CHILD
Is a Jane Doe uncovered at a construction site the body of her client's long-lost daughter Maureen? If so, what's become of Maureen's two-year-old daughter?

Scaredy Cat by Mark Billingham is $1.99 at Amazon US. This is the second DI Tom Thorne book. Not sure how necessary it is to have read the first one. I read the first book, Sleepyhead, years ago and really enjoyed it.

Quote:
It was a vicious, calculated murder. The killer selected his victim at London’s Euston station, followed her home on the tube, strangled her to death in front of her child. At the same time, killed in the same way, a second body is discovered at the back of King’s Cross station. It is a grisly coincidence that eerily echoes the murders of two other women, stabbed to death months before on the same day.

DI Tom Thorne sees the link and comes to a horrifying conclusion. This is not a serial killer that the police are up against—this is two of them. Finding the body used to be the worst part of the job, but not any more. Now each time a body is found, Thorne knows that somewhere out there is a second victim waiting to be discovered. But while the killers’ methods might be the same, their manner is strikingly different. Thorne comes to realize that he is hunting very different people—one ruthless and in control, the other submissive, compliant, terrified.

Thorne must catch a man whose need to manipulate is as great as his need to kill. A man who will threaten those closest to Thorne himself and show him that the ability to inspire terror is the deadliest weapon of all...

The Crocodile by Maurizio de Giovanni is $2.99

https://smile.amazon.com/Crocodile-W...9282727&sr=8-1

Quote:
The chaotic, shadowy city of Naples proves the perfect hunting ground for a killer dubbed “The Crocodile” by the press. Like a crocodile, when he devours his own children, he cries. And like a crocodile he is a perfect killing machine: He waits and watches until his prey is within range, and then he strikes.

Three young people with very diverse backgrounds have been found murdered in three different neighborhoods, each shot with a single bullet, execution style. While his colleagues see little or no connection, Inspector Giuseppe Lojacono, smells a rat. Once an esteemed member of the mobile unit of the Agrigento police force, Lojacono was accused of leaking sensitive information to the mob and has now lost everything—first and foremost the love of his wife and daughter. But now he’s been given a second chance and a shot at clearing his name. A young magistrate has heard of his preternatural skills and his incredible powers of observation and she thinks a man like him is needed in Naples. So it is that Inspector Lojacono is charged with finding the link between the three dead bodies. At the root of these murders, he will discover, is a pain that still burns, a sense of guilt than cannot be purged, and one all-consuming love.

A Deal on a Handshake by Loretta Jackson and Vickie Britton contains seven short stories in their Jeff McQuede High Country series. I'm not sure about the publication status of the short stories themselves, but the full-length titles in the series are published by Thomas & Mercer. A Deal on a Handshake is free right now at Kindle US and UK, so if you want to try it, you can do so for free...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EMYYZV0
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00EMYYZV0

Spoiler:
Quote:
In these seven mysteries Sheriff Jeff McQuede finds himself in the middle of a deal made on a handshake—where the result is murder. Set in the high county of modern-day Wyoming, the deal makers are speculators at an old-time mountain man rendezvous, traders vying over rare Native American pottery, or two family patriarchs pretending to bridge a lifetime of feuding. Throughout McQuede battles his arch-enemy Ruger, who he suspects runs a host of illegal activities, but generally manages to evade McQuede’s traps.

In each of these stories McQuede, putting his own life on the line, relentlessly seeks out the dangerous men who have broken trust.

Too bad it's book #12. Otherwise I'd give it a try. I can't read books out of order. It's a compulsion.

Have you read book 1? The way I go is read the first book. If I totally love it, I pick up the books on deep discount over time (I have other things to read). After about 3 years, I've often accumulated much of the series at much lower cost. I almost never pay full price, but if I had to do so for 2 books out of 12, not a problem. I also prefer to read books in order although some of my detective series really only require that you read the first book or two and then the rest can be random. Most scifi and fantasy build from prior books, so not really an option, IMHO.

A good recent example was Michael Jecks series The Last Templar. My Mom wanted to sell/give away the paper copies, but she does love this series. I had 2 or 3 of the books and now the entire series has been on sale. Most expensive was $3.99. So, have nearly the whole series (29 books) for about $50 instead of the original prices combined of near $200. Most were accumulated in the last year. Kills my TBR but Mom has already read all that have been issued.
