In South Africa (where the poster is located) and other parts of the world where copyright duration is life + 50 years, C. S. Lewis works have been in the public domain since 2013. He died in 1963.

Exactly. Same thing in Canada. Enterprising folks have packaged up the public domain works and have them for sale at various price points here.

That's because the illustrator, Pauline Baynes, lived until 2008. The illustrations won't be public domain until 2059 in life+50 countries, or 2079 in life+70 countries.

George Orwell's 1984 is $2.99 at Amazon. This is likely a better copy than the 99 cent one I bought earlier this year, which has been pulled from sale!

I wanted to thank everyone for posting deals this last year. I'm currently reading The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, and I'm sure I got it via a deal posted here!

I'd guess that the 99 cent copy was ripped off one of the project gutenberg sites in a Life+50 country and illegally sold in countries where it isn't yet PD and had the issues inherent to such a copy.

This one seems to be from an actual publisher who presumably legitimately owns the rights to publish his work, not that "being sold by a legit publisher" makes a book immune from the same issues project gutenberg works have (mostly typos due to OCR failure not being caught by human proofreaders)\

(FWIW, Orwell's works should be PD in life+70 countries as of the end of 2020 as he died in 1950)

Most likely. The 99 cent one appears to be from India (same as a copy of Animal Farm I got at the same time). Both have errors, so I'm happy to get a better copy for a couple of dollars more.

Not that BPH-pubished eBooks of old dead tree books never have issues... the eBook copy of Different Seasons I purchased circa 2014 had an obvious typo likely due to OCR.

But I'd guess 1984 sells more eBook copies in a normal day than Different Seasons sells in a year, so it's more likely to get actual attention rather than be a lazy cash grab.
