What about support for newer devices? Onyx are coming out with new Readers. Will they work with Calibre 4.23 or will they need 5.x to work?

The calibre support forums are a few doors down. This thread is where announcements about new versions of a particular 3rd-party plugin are made/discussed.

If one were to search for the name of this plugin and "github" with one's favourite search engine, one might find a place where one could fetch the current plugin repository and build a release that works[*] with Calibre 5 and python3.
Sure it's not drop in, but if one was familar with a command line one should be able to have one's cake and eat it too. [*] Only tested with Amazon purchases, haven't bought anything epub lately. |

Also, it doesn't work with Kindle for PC/MAC even if you have a previously compatible version. I have not tried eReader/Mobipocket/Kindle for Android/Barnes & Noble. I have no eReader eBooks, no Mobipocket eBooks (not the Kindle version), and B&N stopped working for me for a long time.
I've not tested Obok because I would have to install Kobo Desktop or Syn and I don't want to do either. |

Old comment, but I've been away.

I'm not a Luddite. I know that down the road de-DRM will be made to play nicely with the new Calibre. At that point, I'll update. Until then, older Calibre is more useful and I don't see what having a second install of Calibre will do. What new features are there in Calibre 5 that makes it a 'must update'? |

To be honest I downgraded from the 5.0 branch today and I don't see any glaring differences. I'm sure they exist, but for the average use of Calibre (and certainly in the context of this thread) 4.23 or whatever it is is perfectly adequate.

I'm still on 2.something! I find it's just fine and does everything I need it to. I guess I'll update to 4.23, but avoid 5.X

In that list the oldest version is 3.34. Any version older than that is used by well under 1% of calibre users. (The newest version listed is 4.10 so it appears that this list is no longer being updated.) Last edited by jhowell; 10-16-2020 at 09:17 AM. |

If you are unable to run 5.x, run 4.23 if you can. If you cannot run 4.23, run 3.48.
If you are on an older OS that will not allow you to run Calibre 5.x and you are able to upgrade your OS, do so. If you are unable to upgrade your OS to run Callibre 5.x, save for a new computer. The thing is, it's a good idea to be as future proof as possible instead of stuck in the past. |
